Change in Ukraine, Olympics Finish

Caught: Ending a 13-year manhunt, the world’s most-wanted drug dealer, Joaquín Guzmán Loera known as “El Chapo,” has been caught. Guzman, whose nickname means “Shorty,” escaped prison in a laundry basket in 2001 as he faced extradition for trial in the US. The drug kingpin had a few scuffs on his face and body after he was captured by Mexican marines in the resort city of Mazatlan at the mouth of the Gulf of California. He had been in hiding for so long authorities were not even sure what he looked like.

Ukraine: Parliament appointed its speaker Oleksandr Turchynov to be acting president after voting yesterday to remove President Viktor Yanukovich, who left town with protesters at the palace door. His rival, former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko, was freed from a hospital where she had been held prisoner. She was cheered by thousands of protesters in Kiev’s Independence Square, telling them, “You are heroes.”

World: Two people were killed and 22 injured when a bomb exploded today in the busy shopping district of Bangkok. No one has claimed responsibility. Yesterday gunmen riding in a pickup truck attacked an anti-government rally 180 miles east of Bangkok, wounding at least 35 people. Protesters accuse Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra of corruption and want her to resign.

The Obit Page: Maria von Trapp, the second oldest and the last survivor of the von Trapp family singers, died in Vermont at age 99. The family fled Nazi Austria in 1939 and became the inspiration for the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical “The Sound of Music” and the resulting movie starring Julie Andrews.

Sochi: All the following results have already appeared on television.

-Canada beat Sweden 3-0 today to win the gold medal in hockey and complete the winter games. Yesterday Finland kicked American butt 5-0 to eliminate Team USA from the medal stand.

-American born snowboarder Vic Wild won his second gold medal … for Russia. The native of White Salmon, Wash. is married to a Russian woman who also won bronze in a snowboarding event. Wild says he thought Olympic snowboarding didn’t get enough support in the US so he decided to slide for his wife’s country instead.

Country swapping is not unusual. Russia’s short-track skater Viktor Ahn was born in South Korea but felt dissed by his native country. Despite having won multiple world championships, Ahn didn’t make the 2010 Olympic team because he had been out recovering from a slashed leg. He moved to Russia, much to what must be South Korea’s regret. Ahn has won three gold medals for Russia in Sochi.

Nolan Kasper of Vermont, a longtime friend of The Rooney Report, was the only American to finish in the slalom, coming in 13th. Gold medalist Ted Ligety skied off the course on his second run. It’s the second time in two Olympics that Kasper was the only American to finish when one of the stars bit the snow ahead of him.

Athletic Execution: The joke making the rounds of disappointed Russian Olympic fans: The mediocre Russian biathlon team was ordered to shoot the country’s losing hockey team, but no one was wounded.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
