Calif. Mudslide, Ceasefire, High Times

Mudslide: A rare summer rain caused mudslides near Mt. Baldy in California’s San Bernardino County, killing one person and trapping about 3,000 people in the mountains. Among the stranded were 500 campers who had just arrived. The mud wiped out roads, trees, and swept away cars as rain fell at the rate of several inches an hour.

On Tap: After three days of a toxic water warning, the mayor of Toledo has declared the city’s water safe to drink again. The public water had been contaminated with a toxin that came from an algae bloom in Lake Erie.

The World at War:

-Gaza: Israel announced it would stop shooting for seven hours today in most of Gaza to allow delivery of humanitarian aid and let people return to their homes, if only for a while. Israel killed a Palestinian leader just before the truce began. And in Jerusalem one person was killed when an Arab man used a backhoe to overturn a bus. He was shot and killed.

Both the United States and United Nations condemned the strike yesterday on a UN school that killed 10 Palestinians. Reports said a missile aimed at a passing motorcyclist instead hit a line of people waiting for food. Israel said it is investigating, as it has with hits on two other schools used as shelters. The UN keeps Israel informed of the exact locations of 90 schools and shelters where it is protecting 260,000 civilians.

More than 1,800 Palestinians have been killed in 28 days and 65 Israelis, just four of them civilians.

-Iraq: Fighters from the Islamic State chased away Kurdish forces and captured one of Iraq’s largest electricity-producing dams as well as an oil field. It’s a big win. The Sunni militants could withhold power and water, or flood downstream cities if they choose. The oil field is the fourth they have captured.

Kurdish “Peshmerga” troops withdrew after a 24-hour confrontation in a move considered shockingly out of character. The Peshmerga are considered to be some of the toughest fighters in Iraq and were unbeaten until the dam fell.

-Ukraine: The Ukrainian army is pressing in on the rebel-held cities of Luhansk and Donetsk. The Ukraine defense minister said his troops have whittled away a considerable part of rebel territory and predicts his soldiers will win.

China Quake: The death toll in yesterday’s earthquake in southwest China has risen to nearly 400 and could go higher. The government sent in 2500 soldiers to help with search and rescue.

Off Tee: Tiger woods left an Ohio golf tournament yesterday after aggravating a troublesome back injury. Woods has not won a major event in six years. Since surgery in March, he’s put in some of  the worst performances of his career. At 38 and with a recurring injury, Woods could be facing the end.

What Goes Around: Israeli spies listened in on Secy. of State John Kerry’s phone calls during 2013 peace negotiations, according to a report in the German publication Spiegel. The report says that Kerry sometimes made calls on phones that were not encrypted. It’s OK, he’s kind of dull to talk to.

High Times: The NY Times yesterday published its first full page ad for medical marijuana. It featured a man entering a New York brownstone with the caption, “Ian chose an indica cannabis strain to relieve his MS symptoms.” A young woman is jogging by on the sidewalk. Her bubble says, “While fighting cancer, Molly preferred a sativa cannabis.” We’ll have what she’s having.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
