Assad Wants Time, Fire on the Shore

Syria: Secy. of State John Kerry yesterday implied Syria could still be attacked if it doesn’t quickly produce an accounting of its chemical weapons. “There ought to be consequences if it doesn’t take place,” Kerry said. Syria asked for 30 days after signing the chemical weapons ban treaty to comply, but Kerry said that was too long. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told a Russian interviewer that he would not turn over his weapons until the US stops arming the rebel opposition.

World: This morning the four men convicted of last December’s fatal rape in India were sentenced to hang. A crowd outside the courthouse cheered. One of the original six defendants hanged himself, and a juvenile was sentenced to three years detention, the maximum for a juvenile in India.

National: A sweeping fire yesterday on the Jersey Shore destroyed six blocks of boardwalk and 20 shops in an area that had been repaired after Hurricane Sandy a year ago. The fire broke out near where the iconic Seaside Heights roller coaster ended up in the Atlantic last year. The sign for the “Funtown” amusement park was framed in fire as the pier behind it burned and collapsed. Gov. Chris Christie said that when he heard the news, “I said to my staff, I feel like I want to throw up.”

Outer Limits: Voyager 1, the little spacecraft that could, has left the solar system after 35 years of flight. With a fraction of the computing power of a cellphone, Voyager 1 has travelled 12 billion miles from earth and is still sending back information about the vast unknown.

Sticky Situation: A pipeline leak of 1400 tons of molasses into Honolulu harbor is killing the fish. Swimmers are warned to stay out of the water because the dead fish are attracting sharks.

Cold War, Cold Case: Bulgaria closed its investigation into the infamous 1978 Cold War murder of dissident Georgi Markov. Markov was near the Waterloo Bridge in London when he was poked in the thigh with an umbrella that injected a microscopic ball containing ricin. Bulgaria’s 35-year statute of limitations expired without an arrest. Of course it was Bulgaria’s communist government at the time that was the prime suspect.

Miss Amerinka: The Miss America Pageant is catching up with the times featuring its first tattooed contestant. The blonde Miss Kansas, Theresa Vail, has a paragraph of inspirational words in gothic type from her right armpit to her hip. It features the large words “Serenity, Courage, Wisdom”. Any man close enough to read the finer print might be arrested.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
