Asia Jet Missing, de Blasio Plays for Peace

World: An AirAsia jet with 162 people on board has gone missing on a two-hour flight from Indonesia to Singapore. Air traffic controllers lost contact with the plane about 40 minutes into the flight when it was over the Java Sea. The pilots had just told air traffic they were going to climb from 32,000 feet to 38,000 to avoid a cloud. Search and rescue operations are underway.

> A rescue is also underway for an Italian ferry carrying 460 people that has caught fire cruising from Greece to Northern Italy. The ship is fighting the fire in stormy weather just off the heel of the boot of Italy. Other ships in the area have been called to help take on passengers.

Nation: Outside a church a Queens megachurch police officers turned their back on a video screen as New York Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke at the funeral of a murdered New York police officer. The headline on the NY Post this morning says, “To Serve & Reject.”

As many as 20,000 police officers and other mourners were in attendance.

Inside, the mayor tried to console the cops who accuse him of not supporting them in a time of strife. “Blessed are the peacemakers,” de Blasio said, describing the job of policing and how officers “help make a place that otherwise would be torn with strife a place of peace.”

Officer Rafael Ramos was assassinated with his partner as they sat in his car. Ramos’s son Justin is a sophomore at Bowdoin College in Maine, which announced after his father’s death that they are waiving his tuition.

Demo: A 19-year-old Missouri demonstrator who had gained notoriety for calling for peace in demonstrations against the police has been charged with arson in Berkeley, Mo. Police say Joshua Brown, who was a star in front of news cameras in nearby Ferguson, set fire to a convenience store during protests about the police killing of a young man who was said to have pointed a gun.

Meanwhile a Ferguson, Mo. police officer has been suspended for calling the spontaneous memorial to slain teenager Michael Brown “a pile of trash.”

Cuba Libre: Cuban dissidents say they’ve been kept in the dark about the identities of 53 political prisoners who are supposed to be released as part of the deal to re-establish relations between the US and Cuba. The dissidents, who have always kept the US informed about who is in jail for political reasons, say they have not been consulted about which prisoners are to be released.

Le Blizzard: As many as 15,000 vehicles are reported stranded in the French Alps after heavy snow. The roads to and from French ski areas are blocked. Many of the cars had no snow chains.
