Arrests in Israel, This Bud’s for You

Israel Arrests: Israeli police have arrested up to six people in the killing of an Arab boy who was burned to death in a forest. Authorities believe Muhammad Abu Khdeir was burned alive in revenge for the killing of three teenage Israeli boys.

The people arrested have not been identified.

Police have also released Khdeir’s Palestinian American cousin, who was severely beaten before he was taken into custody. Two videos show the beating. Police accuse him of carrying a slingshot and assaulting officers during the street violence that followed his cousin’s killing.

Bananistan: The Taliban set fire to about 200 oil tanker trucks used to supply fuel to NATO troops in Afghanistan. The apparently unopposed attack took place just outside Kabul. How the tankers were set on fire has not been revealed. The interior minister said in a statement yesterday, “The number of tankers on fire is not yet clear, but based on preliminary reports from police around 200 tankers have been burnt.”

World: Nigeria claims its soldiers killed 53 Boko Haram militants when they attacked an army base in the country’s northeast. Five soldiers and a senior officers also were reported to be dead.

>At least 29 people were killed in coastal Kenya in attacks by the Islamic militant group al-Shabab. The group is becoming a regional force between Somalia and Kenya.

Sports Page: The Netherlands survived a postgame shootout, 4-3, when their substitute goalie Tim Krul made two dramatic saves to beat Costa Rica. Krul had sat on the bench for the entire match plus 30 minutes overtime before he was called to defend the goal in the shootout. Belgium, which beat the US in a heartbreaker, fell to Argentina 1-0 to be eliminated.

Weekend News: Four people died Friday night in the collision of three boats in the waters off Miami after a fireworks display. Authorities received reports of as many as a dozen people thrown into the water. Two people died in the hospital and two bodies were found in the water.

>Four children died and eight row houses were destroyed in a fire in Philadelphia Friday night. The children, four-year-old twins, a four-year-old boy, and a baby all were in one house. Three other children and their mother escaped. The fire may have started on a sofa on the porch of one of the adjoining wood frame homes.

>A swimmer was bitten by a juvenile Great White shark Saturday morning off Southern California’s Manhattan Beach pier. The seven-foot shark had been hooked on a fisherman’s line for about 45 minutes and was thrashing to escape when the swimmer came by. The swimmer was bitten once on his right ribcage and is expected to recover.

Stone Age: In the city of organic consumption, Los Angeles yesterday was host to what is believed to be the first marijuana farmer’s market. Stoners thronged the market in long lines. Although medical marijuana is legal in Los Angeles, a city ordinance cut down the number of dispensaries where good bud is expensive. Shoppers had to show ID, and a medical marijuana prescription, which is easier to get in LA than a counterfeit green card.
