Worst Cover-up, Presidential Fantasies

Dance of the Seven Veils: Turkish investigators have found clothing in an abandoned Saudi consulate car that is believed to have belonged to the murdered Saudi dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

A look-a-like left the Saudi consulate wearing what appeared to be Khashoggi’s clothes the day he was murdered.

The Trump administration said it is placing personal international sanctions on the 21 people  involved in the plot. Eighteen of the 21 are already under arrest in Saudi Arabia, but Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan called on the Saudis to allow the suspects to be extradited to Turkey to face trial.

President Trump yesterday finally denounced the Saudis’ shifting story as “the worst cover-up ever,” but incredibly he was as critical of their professionalism as he was of their bungled cover. He said, “They had a very bad original concept, it was carried out poorly, and the cover-up was one of the worst in the history of cover-ups,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office. He said that as though murder is simply “a bad original concept,” like a hotel without a restaurant.

“Where it should have stopped is at the deal standpoint,”Trump said. “Whoever thought of that idea, I think, is in big trouble, and they should be in big trouble.”

But what if the person who thought of it is the Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the man who runs the country? Trump has not said whether he thinks bin Salman is responsible.

Erdogan said the Saudi investigation has not reached high enough into the monarchy. “It will not satisfy the public by just pinning this kind of matter on a few security and intelligence officers,” he said. “Covering up this kind of savagery will hurt the conscience of all humanity.”

Fantasyland: As President Trump campaigns for Republican candidates in the midterm elections he makes it up as he goes along; terrorists in the refugee caravan, a million jobs spawned by the Saudi defense contract, and a middle class tax cut to be delivered before the elections just two weeks away.

“That’s on top of the tax decrease that we’ve already given them,” Trump told reporters.

Over the weekend Trump promised a 10 percent middle income tax cut even though no one in Congress had heard a word about it and they’re all on recess until after the election anyway.

The President has no qualms about say things that are not true and backing off later, or even denying he ever said it. On the unproven claim that there could be Middle Eastern terrorists in the Central American refugee caravan he said, “There’s no proof of anything, but there could very well be.”

In the Soup: Federal investigators are looking into an incident in which a pipe bomb was left in the mailbox at the New York country home of billionaire liberal donor George Soros. He’s been the target of right wing hatred.

Which brings us to Campbell’s Soup. Campbell’s executive Kelly Johnston suggested in a Tweet that Soros’s Open Society Foundations have orchestrated the migrant caravan marching north through Mexico.  Posting a picture of the crowd Johnston wrote, “See those vans on the right? What you don’t see are the troop carriers and the rail cars taking them north. @OpenSociety planned and is executing this, including where they defecate.”

Open Society’s chief defecation planning officer could not be reached for comment.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."
