Newsroom Massacre, Trump and Putin to Meet

Deadline Shooting: Five people were killed yesterday in a shooting at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Md. A suspect was arrested. He is described as a 38-year-old local man with a grudge against the paper.

One of the dead was Rob Hiassen, a columnist, brother of the writer Carl Hiassen.

Gazette crime reporter Phil Davis tweeted that he and others hid under their desks. “Gunman shot through the glass door to the office and opened fire on multiple employees. Can’t say much more and don’t want to declare anyone dead, but it’s bad,” Davis wrote. “There is nothing more terrifying than hearing multiple people get shot while you’re under your desk and then hear the gunman reload.”

The remaining Gazette staff collected themselves, covered their own tragedy, and published a newspaper.

International Bromance: President Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed to meet for one-on-one talks July 16th in Helsinki, the White House announced.

“The two leaders will discuss relations between the United States and Russia, and a range of national security issues,” the White House said in a statement.

It will be the first summit between the two, coming at a time when the White House and the country are sucking in their collective breath in anticipation of the Special Counsel’s report on Russian election influencing.

“Russia continues to say they had nothing to do with Meddling in our Election!” Trump tweeted yesterday while complaining about Hillary Clinton, the Democratic National Committee, and the FBI. “So many questions, so much corruption!”

In a flurry of tweets he also attacked the Special Counsel himself. “When is Bob Mueller going to list his Conflicts of Interest? Why has it taken so long? Will they be listed at the top of his $22,000,000 Report…And what about the 13 Angry Democrats, will they list their conflicts with Crooked H? How many people will be sent to jail and…… ….persecuted on old and/or totally unrelated charges (there was no collusion and there was no obstruction of the no collusion)…And what is going on in the FBI & DOJ with Crooked Hillary, the DNC and all of the lies? A disgraceful situation!”

15-Yard Penalty: Former Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson was fined $2.75 million by the NFL after accusations of sexual misconduct made by former employees were substantiated in a months-long investigation. Shortly after Sports Illustrated exposed Richardson’s behavior, he entered a deal to sell the team for $2 billion.

Family Values: First Lady Melania Trump made her second visit to children detained under the President’s “Zero Tolerance” policy for illegal border crossings. “She wanted to see everything for herself,” her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, said. “She supports family reunification. She thinks that it’s important that children stay with their families.”

The Trump administration is under court order to re-unite families.

Military bases are expected to start building tent cities after July 4th to house migrant families captured by the border patrol. Nearly 600 demonstrators were arrested yesterday outside the Hart Senate Office Building in Washington. Nine protesters were arrested in demonstrations outside the offices of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Portland, Ore. Organizers under the name “Families Belong Together” are planning nationwide protests tomorrow.

The Obit Page: The colorful and combative science fiction writer Harlan Ellison, who used to carry a baseball bat to television story conferences, has died at age 84.

Ellison wrote a shelf full of books and short stories and was a prolific writer for television series including “The Outer Limits,” “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea,” “Star Trek,” and “The Starlost.”

He had a hot temper and defended his work physically. He once leaped across a conference table and assaulted an ABC executive. Another time he brought a gun to a story conference, proceeding to clean it during the conversation.

Ellison said of Hollywood, “This town is filled with weasels and wormers and people who will stab you in the front if they can’t reach your back.”

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
