Turkey Warns Russia, Huge Prison Release

Crowded Skies: Turkey is bristling over Russian violations of that country’s air space in the bombing campaign against Islamic State and rebel targets over Syria. At least twice, Russian combat jets have strayed over Turkey in the increasingly crowded skies of the Middle East.

Turkish President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, warned Russia that any “attack on Turkey means an attack on NATO.” He said, “If Russia loses a friend like Turkey with whom it has a lot of co-operation it is going to lose a lot of things. It needs to know this.”

American jets have also begun to rub elbows with the Russians over Syria, coming within 20 miles, which is close in high-speed air combat.

Water, Water: South Carolina is preparing for a second wave and worrying about dams bursting as floodwaters move downstream. About 1,000 residents have been evacuated from the area around one dam where a sinkhole has formed.

Prison Break: The Justice Department is about to release 6,000 federal prisoners in a new effort to alleviate prison crowding and give a break to nonviolent drug offenders who received harsh sentences in the 80s and 90s. Jesselyn McCurdy, a senior legislative counsel with the American Civil Liberties Union said, “Far too many people have lost years of their lives to draconian sentencing laws born of the failed drug war. People of color have had to bear the brunt of these misguided and cruel policies.” About 2,000 of the prisoners, though, are illegal immigrants who will be deported because they have criminal convictions.

GunBeat: The mother of Oregon mass killer Christopher Harper-Mercer shared her son’s fascination with guns, according to her online postings. Laurel Harper wrote, “I keep two full mags in my Glock case. And the ARs & AKs all have loaded mags.” She said her son was a great source of knowledge about guns.

Harper wrote that both she and her son had Asperger’s syndrome, a mental condition on the autism spectrum. She wrote abut the difficulties of raising her son, a situation similar to the mother of Newtown, Conn. shooter Adam Lanza, who connected with her troubled son through a love of guns. Lanza killed his mother before going on his shooting spree.

Campaign Trail: The leading but lagging Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton is beginning to separate herself from the policies and legacy of Barack Obama as she tries to distinguish herself as a differing voice. Clinton has come out against the Keystone XL pipeline, on which Obama has yet to make a decision, and she has said that Obama’s early effort to deport illegal immigrants as a way to encourage the Republicans to engage on immigration reform was a failure. Clinton has also said she would take executive action on gun control. Despite Obama’s reputation as a “gun grabber,” he’s done virtually nothing to control guns.

Happiest Place: For the second time this year the company that perfected separating parents from their money has raised the price of happiness. Tickets to Disneyland and Disneyworld started the year at $96 for visitors 10 and older and now it’s $105 … parking is extra. But hey, wait, little kids are cheaper! It’s $99 for children 3 to 9, but that’s before you buy them a hamburger.

ArtBeat: A group of protesters has been picketing the Boston Museum of Fine Arts demanding that its Renoir paintings be removed. It’s not because Renoir was a white male, ate meat, or committed a micro-aggression, but because his small group of vehement critics say he “sucks at painting.” Their signs read “Aesthetic Terrorist and “ReNOoir.” Speaking to NPR, chief critic Max Gellar said of Renoir, “If you took his word for it, trees would be a collection of disgusting, green squiggly lines and eyeballs would be jet black as if they were colored by Sharpies.”

We have not taken an editorial stand on this, but we do think Renoir is no Fragonard.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
