Trump Claims Millions of Illegal Votes

Yes, He Said It: Donald Trump yesterday questioned the legitimacy of the election tweeting, “In addition to winning the Electoral College in a landslide, I won the popular vote if you deduct the millions of people who voted illegally.”

He has no evidence that anyone, let alone millions of people, voted illegally. And if they did, who they voted for. Even in victory, Trump is carrying on as he did in the campaign, questioning the legitimacy of the vote.

The president–elect appears to be mightily annoyed that Hillary Clinton announced she’s joining a recount of the vote in three states. She leads by more than two million in the popular vote:

In Transition: Trump aide Kellyanne Conway yesterday stepped up her public attack on Mitt Romney as a candidate for Secretary of State, saying, “We don’t even know if he voted for Donald Trump.”

It’s very unusual for a political aide to openly question the pending decisions of her boss. on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Conway said, “People feel betrayed to think that Governor Romney, who went out of his way to question the character and the intellect and the integrity of Donald Trump, now our President-elect, would be given the most significant cabinet post of all, Secretary of State.” The former Massachusetts governor, who ran against Barack Obama in 2012, called Trump a “con man, a phony and a fraud” who engaged in “absurd third-grade theatrics.”

Conway said in a separate appearance on CNN, “I’m all for party unity but I’m not sure we have to pay for that with the Secretary of State position.”

Romney and former NY Mayor Rudolph Giuliani appear to be the prime candidates, but there are likely to be others.

Playing to the Masses: You never know what Donald Trump will do. He likes to surprise you, and in recent days he’s been shifty on his campaign promises to build his wall, completely repeal Obamacare, and send Hillary Clinton to prison.

Appearing on ABC yesterday, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz said, “If we’re given the White House and both houses of Congress and we don’t deliver, I think there will be pitchforks and torches in the streets.” Cruz said on “This Week,” “And I think quite rightly. I think people are so fed up with Washington. This election was a mandate with change, and the most catastrophic thing Republicans could do is go back to business as usual.”

Permawar: The Syrian army reports that it has taken two major districts of Eastern Aleppo in a campaign to split the city in two and defeat the rebels. Aleppo is believed to be home to about 275,000 people, thousands of whom have been fleeing into either government or rebel-held areas to escape the fighting.

In Iraq, the government claims it has killed 1,000 Islamic State fighters in the battle to retake Mosul. The army has taken about half of eastern Mosul, facing snipers, suicide bombers, and car bombs.

Siblings: Fidel Castro’s sister Juanita, who lives in South Florida, spoke to the NY Times about the death of the Cuban leader she broke with more than 50 years ago and has not spoken to since. She said it’s unseemly for people to celebrate his death, even though she believes he was a huge disappointment. “‘Bread with freedom’ — that expression remained recorded in my mind, because I thought it was going to be that way. I felt as betrayed as the most humble of Cubans,” she said. “He had it all in his hands, without having to turn it all over to any power, and then he goes and turns himself over to the worst of powers, the Russians.”

The Ball Cap President: Donald Trump was spotted yesterday leaving Florida spirting his new presidential baseball cap. The bright red hat says USA in big letters on the crown with “45” stitched into the sides.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."
