Snowden Offered Asylum, Egypt Violence

Snowden: Nicaragua and Venezuela have offered asylum to NSA leaker Edward Snowden. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Snowden “can come and live away from the imperial North American persecution.” Snowden is believed to be in the transit area of the Moscow airport.

Egypt: Authorities say 30 people died in violence around the country yesterday. Supporters of deposed president Mohamed Morsi battled soldiers and Morsi opponents with rocks, clubs and Molotov cocktails. The spiritual leader of The Muslim Brotherhood said, “We will bring him back bearing him on our necks, sacrifice our souls for him.” Four demonstrators were killed outside the barracks where Morsi might be held. Veteran BBC Correspondent Jeremy Bowen was lightly wounded in the head by a shotgun pellet.

World: Islamic extremists who don’t believe in education killed 41 children and a teacher at a Nigerian government boarding school. They set fire to a building and shot those who tried to escape.

Trayvon: George Zimmerman’s mother testified yesterday it was her son’s voice on a 911 audiotape calling for help moments before Zimmerman shot and killed 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. Earlier in the day Martin’s mother and brother said it was Trayvon’s voice on that tape.

Texas Justice Redux: A Texas teenager has been in jail for four months facing charges of making a terrorist threat. Nineteen-year old Justin Carter and a friend were having a discussion on Facebook about a video game when the friend said Carter was “crazy”. Carter replied, “Oh yeah, I’m real messed up in the head. I’m going to go shoot up a school full of kids and eat their still-beating hearts.” Then, according to his father he wrote “LOL” and “J/K” for “just kidding”. The comment was reported to the police and Carter was arrested. He’s been unable to make a $500,000 bail.

In My Room: The BBC reports that as many as a million Japanese young men have isolated themselves and are hiding in their rooms, usually in their parents’ home. Unable to handle shifting societal norms in Japan, they are known as the “hikikomori” …. withdrawn.

Just Beautiful: Former Miss Pennsylvania Sheena Monnin has to pay a $5 million judgment to the Miss USA pageant after losing a defamation lawsuit. She had said the pageant was rigged. Monnin said she learned the names of the top five finishers before last year’s show began and quit as soon as those names were publicly announced. Organizers claimed the pageant’s reputation was damaged. It’s not like she said the contestants’ breasts are fake and pageant king Donald Trump dyes his hair.
