Cubs in the 108th and the 10th

Next Year Arrives: The city of Chicago went nuts last night after the Cubs won their first World Series in 108 years, beating the Indians 8-7 in Cleveland.

Cubs fans have lived in eternal hope and suffered the mythical Curse of the Billy Goat since the last century. Their hopes were nearly dashed again when Cleveland tied it up in the 8th inning.

The Cubs opened with a home run from their first batter and stretched the lead to 5-1, before Cleveland took advantage of a wild pitch and a fumble by Cubs’ catcher David Ross. At 39 and the oldest player in the Series, Ross later redeemed himself with a 6th inning home run.

What’s already being described as one of the greatest World Series games ever was delayed for rain heading into the 10th inning. Chicago scored twice and hung on while Cleveland scored one final run.

E Minus 5: President Obama criticized the FBI for revealing the new trove of Hillary Clinton emails without knowing what was in the communications or whether there was anything inappropriate about them.

Without naming FBI Director James Comey, Obama was taking him to task. “We don’t operate on incomplete information,” Obama said in an interview with NowThis News, which was broadcast yesterday. “We don’t operate on leaks. We operate based on concrete decisions that are made.”

The politicians and political vivisectionists are wondering whether FBI director James Comey is trying to tilt the election toward Donald Trump by feeding the debate over Hillary Clinton’s use of private email while she was secretary of state. Comey is historically a Republican, but he is the man who declined to bring charges against Clinton over the summer.

Lesser known is the FBI release Tuesday of documents related to President Bill Clinton’s 2001 pardon of fugitive financier Marc Rich, which really infuriated the FBI at the time. Rich was was living out of the country to avoid prosecution and appeared to have bought his pardon with political donations.

Nation: A 46-year-old Iowa man was arrested yesterday in the ambush murders of two police officers who were shot while sitting in their patrol cars. Scott Michael Green surrendered west of Des Moines.

Investigators seemed to know pretty quickly who they were looking for, but didn’t say how. Ross McCarty, chief of police in Urbandale, said at a press conference, “Most of our officers have some understanding of Mr. Greene.” Greene, an Iraq war veteran, was recently escorted away from the Urbandale High School after waving a Confederate flag at black students.

Off. Justin Martin of the Urbandale Police was found about 1 am yesterday just a few blocks from Greene’s home with the ground around his cruiser littered with .223 shell casings. That’s a common caliber for an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.

Des Moines Sgt. Anthony Beminio was found in similar fashion, about a half hour later.

>Former pro-wrestler Hulk Hogan has agreed to settle his $140 million damage judgement against Gawker Media for $31 million.  Gawker had posted video of Hogan having sex with the wife of his friend, radio DJ Bubba the Love Sponge.

Gawker had been on the leading edge of renegade online journalism, but the old rules of libel and slander still rule. After losing the suit Gawker sold itself to Univision.

Brexit: A British court has ruled that Parliament must vote to approve exiting the European Union before Prime Minister Theresa May pulls the trigger. May’s Conservative Party olds a slim lead in Parliament.

Going Up: The NY Times notes that truth-challenged Republican candidate has been telling tall tales for a long time. Trump and his real estate company claim that the flagship Trump Tower in Manhattan is 68 stories tall, when it is actually 58. By Trump’s math, because the Tower has a soaring atrium and 19 commercial floors below, he started counting the residential floors at 30, thereby making a 68 story building out of a 58 story building.

If his wall on the border with Mexico also has an atrium, it’s going to be a very high wall.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
