Health Prices Up, House Approves Pipeline

Nation: The 2015 Obamacare healthcare policies go on sale today, but the price will go up in many parts of the country. Seven million Americans have Obamacare policies but many will have to shop around and switch or pay more for what they have, according to numbers released by the Obama administration. Some of the price increases could be up to 20 percent, but most would be in the range of 10 to 15 percent. On the bright side, one study says that for 29 percent of the subsidy-eligible customers, the price of their healthcare policy will go down.

But It’s Not Winter: Snow today in Denver and Des Moines. Flurries in Flint, Mich. It’s 23 in Chicago, 31 in Topeka, 35 in Amarillo, and 29 in Millinocket, Maine.

The Pipeline: The House voted overwhelming yesterday to move forward with the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which President Obama has yet to sign off on. But the lame duck Democratic majority in the Senate is not likely to approve. The pipeline would carry crude from the Canadian oil sands that is more polluting than other grades of oil. The State Department would still have to approve the pipeline because it crosses an international border, and, for the moment, President Obama appears likely to veto.

The Game: The NY Times reports that a starting cornerback for the Florida State football team appears to have received special treatment from the police after a hit and run car accident.

PJ Williams collided with a teenager returning home from work at 2:37 am one night last month. Both cars were totaled. Williams and his two passengers, one of whom was the other starting cornerback, ran from the scene. Williams returned but was not tested for alcohol or asked whey he had run away. The accident was not entered into the Tallahassee online listing of police calls. The Times has been investigating special treatment given to Florida State football players ever since Tallahassee police failed to investigate a rape accusation against quarterback Jameis Winston.

World: Sweden says it has confirmed that a foreign mini-submarine entered its territorial waters last month, but can’t say whose sub it was. The Swedes say drag marks on the sea bottom are from a mini-sub. The prime suspect, or course, is Russia.

The Obit Page: Former Chicago mayor Jane Byrne, the only woman elected the city’s mayor, has died at age 81. Byrne bucked the Democratic political machine and shocked the political world when she was elected in 1979. After a brutal winter in which incumbent Michael Bilandic failed to clear the streets of snow, Byrne built a coalition of liberals, blacks, and people snowed into their homes. But Byrne quickly became known as eccentric and overwhelmed by the job. She served just one term.

Thunderstruck: Researchers writing in the journal Science say rising global temperatures will increase the frequency of lightning strikes 50 percent by the end of the century. The article predicts the frequency of lighting strikes will increase 12 percent for every degree of warming.

Duke Nuke ‘Em: Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel announced he’s pouring $10 billion into American nuclear forces over the next five years to whip them into line and make sure we have the ability to destroy the world. Both maintenance and the command structure have deteriorated. A report says crews at ICBM bases in the West have to share a single wrench for a specific purpose and send it around by Federal Express. But the admiral in charge of Strategic Command said comfortingly, “You don’t see the mushroom cloud or that sort of thing. We must continue that.”Well then, it’s all good.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
