Arms for Rebels, Chile Volcano, Bike City

World: The European Union voted to lift its arms embargo to Syrian rebels, although there is no immediate move to actually ship weapons. Individual governments will have to decide what they do. Meanwhile, US Sen. John McCain, who has been an advocate for arming the rebels, made an unannounced visit to Syria to meet with rebel leaders. The Daily Beast reports that rebel leaders told McCain the government has used chemical weapons several times in recent weeks.

  • Chile and Argentina have ordered the evacuation of about 3,000 people from a 15-mile radius around a volcano that straddles the border between the two countries. The volcano has not actually erupted, but seismic activity convinced authorities to go on what they call “red alert.”

National: Kentucky police believe the killing of a Bardstown police officer along an exit ramp was an intentional ambush. Investigators say debris was put on the road to attract someone to move it and that’s what the officer was doing. It’s unknown whether the officer was a specific or a random target.

  • Fire aboard a Royal Caribbean cruise liner ended a trip from Baltimore to the Bahamas for 2,200 passengers. No one was injured, but the ship suffered extensive fire damage in the stern area. Royal Caribbean is the same line that had a ship adrift at sea without power or plumbing for five days in February.

So In Love: President Obama and NJ Gov. Chris Christie are expected to appear together today to inspect the cleanup of the Jersey shore since Hurricane Sandy. The tough-love Republican Christie was criticized last fall for being too cozy with the President, but the governor has a lot of success to show for working well with the administration.

Sports Section: Duke lacrosse dug out of a 5-0 hole to beat Syracuse 16-10 for the national championship. Duke has won the national title twice since the team was suspended for a year during the 2006 scandal in which three players were falsely accused of raping a stripper at a party.

Crime Pays: The US Marshals Service is selling the former long Island home of Bernie Madoff’s son, Peter. The younger Madoff was chief compliance officer for his father’s giant Ponzi scheme. Peter Madoff pled guilty, was sentenced to 10 years in prison and his home was seized to pay the investors he helped to rob. Asking price: $4.995 million.

Make It Anywhere: New York’s bicycle share program opened Monday with 5,999 bikes. There were 6,000 but one of the bright blue Citi Bikes was stolen Sunday night when workers weren’t looking.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
