Alabama Upset, Trump v. Gillibrand

Alabama Upset: Alabama voters drew a thin line on ethics and decency last night sending a Democrat to the US Senate for the first time in 25 years, reducing the Republican majority to just one vote. It is an enormous defeat for President Trump, who threw his full weight behind Roy Moore, an accused child molester.

Doug Jones won 49.9 percent to Moore’s 48.4, a margin of about 20,000 votes. In the end it may have been the 1.7 percent of voters who cast write-ins for neither candidate who may have made the difference.

Jones said at the top of his victory speech, “I’ve been waiting all my life and now I just don’t know what the hell to say.”

Moore refused to concede, suggesting that the margin of victory might be within the .5 percent that would require an automatic re-count. This morning the margin is three times that. Moore said, “And that’s what we’ve got to do, is wait on God, and let this process play out.” He said God is in control.

Although they lose a critical seat, Senate Republicans dodged a bullet by not having to decide what to do with Moore if he had been elected. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had planned to call a meeting first thing today to discuss whether to immediately haul Moore before the Ethics Committee.

A devout Bible-quoting Christian in a deep red conservative state, it had been Moore’s race to lose until eight women came forward to say he had pursued or sexually molested them when they were teenagers and he was in his 30s.

A vast number of Alabamans dismissed the accusations as political tricks in the closing weeks of the campaign. They believed their God-fearing man.

Moore and his wife wore cowboy hats and rode horses to vote yesterday.

The name of Moore’s horse is “Sassy,” which used to be the name of a magazine for teenage girls. The NY Daily News headline says “Screw You & Horse You Rode In On.”

Moore has said some astounding things over the years, including that Muslims should not serve in Congress and the US should get rid of all the Constitutional amendments after the 10th, including the 13th, abolishing slavery. He said the 9/11 attacks were the Lord’s revenge for Americans drifting away from God.

Moore has referred to American Indians and Asians as “reds and yellows.” Just two days ago Moore’s wife claimed they are not bigots because “one of our attorneys is a Jew.”

The Avenger: President Trump lashed out at NY Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand yesterday after she called for his resignation over accusations of sexual harassment.

Trump tweeted, “Lightweight Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, a total flunky for Chuck Schumer and someone who would come to my office ‘begging’ for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them), is now in the ring fighting against Trump. Very disloyal to Bill & Crooked-USED!”

It was pretty harsh, but the focus is on the part where he said Gillibrand “would do anything” for contributions. Meaning what?

Gillibrand said in response, “It was a sexist smear attempting to silence my voice, and I will not be silenced on this issue.”

Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the president wasn’t talking about sex. He was talking about corruption in politics.

USA Today, not known for a strong voice, published an editorial saying, “With his latest tweet, clearly implying that a United States senator would trade sexual favors for campaign cash, President Trump has shown he is not fit for office.” The editorial goes on, “A president who would all but call Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand a whore is not fit to clean the toilets in the Barack Obama Presidential Library or to shine the shoes of George W. Bush.”

Wow.

Left Foot: A Canadian man walking on the beach in British Columbia the other day found lower left leg bones and a foot still inserted in an athletic shoe. While this might cause shock, alarm, and suspicion of a serial killer on the loose in a lot of places, not in BC. It’s the 13th loose foot found since 2006.

Investigators have identified eight of the 13 feet as belonging to six people. They died in accidents or by suicide.

The Obit Page: Suzanna Leigh, the British actress who co-starred with Elvis Presley in the 1966 movie “Paradise, Hawaiian Style,” has died at age of 72. — Bruce Brown, who romanticized the image of surfers as world-travelling seekers of the perfect wave in his 1966 documentary “The Endless Summer,” has died at age 80. Brown had no training in making films, but he shot and narrated what became a classic.

Banana Republic: Egyptian singer Shaimaa Ahmed, who goes by the name Shyma, has been sentenced to two years in prison after she was found guilty of inciting debauchery and publishing an indecent film. She appeared in a music video in which she suggestively eats a banana in her underwear.

Another singer is facing trial for “spreading provocative publicity” because she said drinking from the River Nile can make you deathly ill.

In other news from Egypt, drinking from the Nile can make you deathly ill.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
