Eastern Blizzard, Manhunt Grows

Deep Trouble: Much of Eastern Pennsylvania, New York and New England are under blizzard watch today as two major storms collide in the Northeast. As many as 3,000 flights have been cancelled. Some news outlets are hyping a storm of “historic” proportions, but don’t judge until you can put a yardstick in it. Two feet of snow are expected.

National: SWAT teams  in Southern California are still searching for a former Los Angeles cop wanted in three killings. In the early hours of Thursday a Riverside officer died in a shootout and his partner was wounded. Another police officer was wounded in a separate shooting. Police also mistakenly shot at two pickup trucks, in one case wounding two women delivering newspapers. At mid day officers surrounded a motel in San Diego thinking 33-year-old Christopher Dorner was there, but later found his burned out pickup truck in the mountains near Big Bear Lake.

Dorner, was originally wanted for the murder of a young couple found in their car. Police believe he killed the daughter, and daughter’s fiancé, of the lawyer who unsuccessfully defended him in his LAPD dismissal hearing. Dorner published an Internet manifesto swearing to clear his name and listing police officials as targets for death. He wrote, “Unfortunately I will not be alive to see my name cleared.”

  • Protesters interrupted the confirmation hearing for CIA Director nominee John Brennan, objecting to the use of drones to kill suspected terrorists. Brennan also took tough questions about waterboarding prisoners, which he declined to describe as actual torture.
  • Failure of a device actually intended to protect the power supply caused the Super Bowl blackout, the Superdome owner says.

Copy That: Germany’s Minister of Education has refused to resign after losing her PHD in a finding that she plagiarized part of her thesis. She’s staying on to maintain high educational standards.

High Noon: Portly former action star Steven Seagal will lead a school-shooting training session for deputies of famed Maricopa Sheriff Joe Arpaio in Arizona. Seagal and Arpaio work well together. They both play tough in front of a camera.

The GramMammaries: CBS has issued a wardrobe advisory to Grammy attendees telling them that all breasts and butts need to be covered. The memo says, “Please avoid exposing bare flesh under curves of the buttocks and buttock crack. Bare sides or under curvature of the breasts is also problematic.” Under these rules, Cher would have been sent home to mom.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
