Super Sunday, “American Sniper” Shot

 XLVII: The San Francisco 49ers meet the Baltimore Ravens today in the Super Bowl in New Orleans. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 EST on CBS. The NY Times statistical prognosticator Nate Silver says the numbers lean toward the 49ers to win. Meanwhile, Calvin Klein is hoping to win with a 30 second commercial launching a new line of men’s underwear.

National: Chris Kyle, author of the bestseller “American Sniper”, was shot and killed yesterday along with another man at a Texas gun range. A 25-year-old man was arrested, but the motive for the shooting was not given. In his book the 38-year-old Kyle wrote about his 150 kills as a sniper in the Middle East. He leaves a wife and children.

  • The hostage situation continues in Alabama where a 67-year-old man is hiding in a bunker on his farm with a 5-year-old boy he kidnapped nearly a week ago. Jimmy Lee Dykes, a Vietnam veteran, killed a school bus driver and took the boy off the bus. Authorities are communicating with Dykes by cellphone and through a plastic pipe into the bunker. They have passed along toys and medicine. The boy has Asperger’s Syndrome and ADHD.
  • Body-count movie star Sylvester Stallone has come out in favor of an assault weapons ban. He said so doing promotional interviews for his latest flick, “Bullet to the Head”.

World: A NYC woman who went missing Jan. 21 while vacationing in Turkey has been found dead near a bridge she had said she was going to photograph. Sarai Sierra, a 33-year-old mother of two, disappeared the day she was supposed to fly home. Police are questioning 11 people.

  • A Marxist group has claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing at the US Embassy in Ankara that killed a guard. The group released a statement calling the United States “the murderer of the peoples of the world.”  

Hollywood: Ben Affleck won Best Director for “Argo” last night at the Directors Guild of America Awards. That has frequently been an indicator of a win for Best Director at the Oscars, but Affleck is not even nominated.

Tweet That: Twitter announced that hackers had gained access to the accounts of 250,000 of the service’s users. @Companyspokesman said, “WTF, R U srius?”

The Shotgun News: After the President said he likes to shoot skeet at Camp David, the White House has revealed a photo of Mr. Obama having a blast with a 12-gauge. But unlike former VP Dick Cheney, Mr. Obama’s best friend is not at the other end of the barrel.
