Tornadoes in Oklahoma, Ricin Investigation

National: Tornadoes ripped through Oklahoma again yesterday leaving five people dead, including a mother and her baby who were sucked out of their car. Vehicles were tossed off the highway and tractor-trailers overturned. A storm-chasing photo van was smashed. Storms also killed six people in Missouri and Arkansas Thursday and Friday. More bad weather could arrive Tuesday.

  • A Texas man is under investigation as the source of poisoned letters sent to President Obama and NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg. His wife called the FBI describing suspicious activity by her husband. The letters were mailed in Shreveport, La. and the sender appeared to have extreme objections to gun control.
  • Medicare has at least two additional years to live, according to The White House. The Medicare Trust Fund now looks like it will be emptied in 2026. The outlook for Social Security remains the same: broke by 2033.
  • Four Houston firefighters were killed when a burning motel and restaurant collapsed on them. One died at the hospital and thirteen others were injured. The firefighters had been searching the inside of the building.

World: Anti-government protests raged for a second day in Turkey. The unrest was sparked by government plans to build shops and apartments in Istanbul’s Taksim Square, one of few parks and a traditional location for political demonstrations. Police used teargas and water cannon. Opponents claim Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, who revitalized Turkey’s economy, behaves like a dictator.

Officers and Gentlemen: A female midshipman at the US Naval Academy has renewed her complaint that she was gang-raped by three members of the football team at an off-campus party in April 2012. During an initial investigation last year the woman was disciplined for under aged drinking while the men were allowed to continue playing football. She said she was intimidated into silence and was still harassed and ostracized.

On Ice: The previous four winners of hockey’s Stanley Cup are now playing in the semi-finals: Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago and Pittsburgh.

Mickey W’s: A former Microsoft executive says he’s going to establish the McDonald’s of marijuana once the laws permit. Jamen Shively says marijuana is a $200 billion a year business and he wants to build a chain of smoke shops around the world for both medical and recreational weed. With him at a Seattle press conference was former Mexican president Vicente Fox, who said he’s interested in importing marijuana. That’s funny, because we’re pretty sure there’s a load coming over the border right now.

It's Been Said

"In my mind, I’ve never crossed the line with anyone, but I didn’t realize the extent to which the line has been redrawn. There are generational and cultural shifts that I just didn’t fully appreciate, and I should have, no excuses."

-Andrew Cuomo, resigning as governor of New York after accusations of sexual harassment
