National: Protesters in New York, Chicago, Atlanta, Baltimore and other cities marched against the not guilty verdict for George Zimmerman, saying the shooting would never have happened if the victim had been white. Violence broke out at a march in Los Angeles and police fired beanbag rounds, arresting several people.
The Justice Department says it is considering whether to bring criminal civil rights charges against Zimmerman. He could also be sued for damages by Trayvon Martin’s family. President Obama called for calm in the wake of Zimmerman’s acquittal in the killing of 17-year-old Martin. In a written statement the President said, “We should ask ourselves if we’re doing all we can to stem the tide of gun violence that claims too many lives across this country on a daily basis. We should ask ourselves, as individuals and as a society, how we can prevent future tragedies like this.” Zimmerman’s lawyer said his client should get his gun back because he will need it to protect himself.
