Lost Flight: Malaysian authorities say they have identified one of two men who boarded the missing Malaysia Airlines flight using false identification, but are not revealing who the man was. They said he is not Malaysian and not from the Uighur area of China that has produced several terrorist incidents.
The entire passenger list is being examined amid reports that more than two passengers may have had false ID. Investigators still are unable to say what happened to the Boeing 777 jetliner, only that it may have broken up in midair. They cannot confirm whether passengers with false identity are connected to the disappearance of the plane.
Searchers are now backing off a claim that they may have seen a piece of wreckage in the ocean, deepening the mystery. A crashed jetliner usually leaves floating debris.
Ukraine: President Obama has scheduled a meeting in Washington Wednesday with Ukraine Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk, The White House announced. It is supposed to be a public display of support for Ukraine, even as tensions rise in Russian-occupied Crimea and Russian President Vladimir Putin tightens his grip.
Violence has been reported between pro-Ukrainian and pro-Russian demonstrators. All Ukrainian television channels broadcasting in Crimea have been knocked off the air, except for one that is re-broadcasting Russian programming.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel told Putin that the planned referendum in Crimea to secede from Ukraine is illegal and unconstitutional.
A statement issued by the Kremlin attributed to Putin said, “The steps taken by the legitimate leadership of Crimea are based on the norms of international law and aim to ensure the legal interests of the population of the peninsula.”
And last, from Kiev, the NY Times reports that 272 people remain missing after months of political protests and violence. Some of them were arrested by the feared Berkut riot police, others by what were believed to be Russian security operatives working in Ukraine. They have not been found in searches of hospitals, jails, and police stations.
Dead, Again: Nazario Moreno, a Mexican drug lord who ran La Familia and later the Knights Templar is reported to have been killed in a shootout with the military. He was first reported dead three years ago. Moreno was known for carrying a Bible and giving Biblical justification for extreme violence, including beheading enemies. This time the cops say fingerprints confirm that Moreno, whose nickname was “the craziest one,” is really dead. Again.
The Obit Page: William Clay Ford, owner of the Detroit Lions football team and the last living grandchild of auto pioneer Henry Ford, died yesterday at age 88. Ford spent nearly his entire adult life as an employee and director of the Ford Motor Co., which is dominated by his family. His son, William Clay Ford, Jr., is the current chairman.
>Will Guarnere, a WWII veteran of the 101st Airborne made famous by the Stephen Ambrose book and HBO television series “Band of Brothers”, has died at age 90. “Wild Bill”, as he was known, jumped with the 101st on D-Day and later lost a leg during the Battle of the Bulge. He was described as fierce in battle to avenge a brother killed fighting the Germans in Italy.
Hold the Fries: The McDonalds hamburger chain continues to lose sales as eating habits change in the US and around the world. They are losing customers to Chipotle and Five Guys Burgers and Fries. Mickey D’s says they might introduce a “build your own burger” and generally improve the image of their food, as opposed to actually improving the food.
