US to Send Troops to Iraq, Texas Cop Quits

Permawar: The US is moving to establish a new military base in Iraq and send 400 troops to train and stiffen Iraqi troops in an effort to re-take the city of Ramadi from the Islamic State. The loss of Ramadi was a huge embarrassment to the Iraqi army, which has already had years of training by the US. It’s looking to be a long war. There are no plans to take back the city of Mosul before 2016.

Police Beat: Eric Casebolt, the McKinney, Texas police officer who threw down a 15-year old girl and waved his gun at other teenagers while breaking up a rowdy pool party, has resigned from the force. The teenagers and members of the community say the cops became overly aggressive because the kids were black. The police chief said of Casebolt, “He came into the call out of control and as the video shows he was out of control during the incident.”

The Gavel: A federal appeals court has upheld a Texas law that may force the closure of 13 of the state’s remaining abortion clinics, leaving only eight. The Texas law requires all abortion clinics to meet the same building and medical standards as hospital-style surgical centers The appeals court sided with the legislature saying, “Texas’ stated purpose for enacting H.B. 2 was to provide the highest quality of care to women seeking abortions and to protect the health and welfare of women seeking abortions.”

Opponents have said that the masked intent of the law is to do away with abortions in Texas.

Nation: Former House Speaker Dennis Hastert pleaded not guilty yesterday in Chicago to federal charges that he broke banking laws and lied about making hush payments to someone he wronged years ago. He was ordered to surrender his passport, get his sons’ guns out of the house, and was released on bond. Hastert is believed to have been paying off a victim of sexual misconduct from the time when he was a high school wrestling coach in the 1970s.

Manhunt: Search teams believe those two murderers who escaped from a New York State prison have been spotted in Willsboro on the western shore of Lake Champlain. David Sweat and Richard Matt are reported to have broken into a house and stolen a gun.

The two are now thought to have been helped in their escape by the female manager of the prison tailor shop who developed a relationship with Matt. The two men were smuggled a power cutting tool they used to cut through their cell walls and a man-sized pipe that led them to a manhole cover in the street.

The Sports Page: LeBron James scored 40 points last night as the Cleveland Cavaliers beat Golden State at home to take a 2-1 lead in the NBA finals. Late in the third quarter a dispirited Golden State was down by 20 points.

>The San Francisco Giants’ Chris Heston threw a no hitter against the Mets at home last night. It was the 27-year-old pitcher’s 15th start in Major League Baseball.

Citizen United: The New York Times reports that fiscal-conservative presidential candidate Marco Rubio basically doesn’t know how to handle money. Saddled with student debt when he was younger, Rubio over-borrowed against his home, and used political money for private purposes. When he was given an $800,000 advance for a book about growing up a Cuban immigrant, Rubio promised followers he would use the money to pay down debt. Then he bought an $80,000 speedboat.

The Obit Page: Vincent Musetto, the former New York Post editor who wrote one of the most famous headlines in the history of newspapers, has died at age 74. The story was perfect tabloid fodder. A customer drinking in a Queens bar argued with the owner and shot him to death. He then took several patrons hostage and forced one of them to cut off the bar owner’s head. Presented with the reporter’s copy, Musetto wrote the headline: “HEADLESS BODY IN TOPLESS BAR.”

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
