Secrets in Mar a Lago: The National Archives says they found classified information among documents former President Trump took with him to Florida when he left The White House.
Under the law, they are supposed to refer the matter to the Justice Department but there’s no official word on whether they’ve done that. Several news outlets report that they have, but referral to Justice doesn’t automatically mean Trump would be prosecuted.
Last month, after the Archives wrangled with Trump’s lawyers, the former president handed over more than a dozen boxes of documents, mementos, gifts, and letters. Among them were a letter former President Barack Obama left for Trump when he was sworn in, and letters written to Trump by the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un.
Also in the boxes was a map Trump famously drew on with a black Sharpie claiming he knew better than the National Weather Service what path the 2019 Hurricane Dorian was going to take.
Rehearsing for War: As tensions rise over the Russian threat to invade Ukraine, Russia and Belarus have begun 10 days of joint military drills. Belarus is a close ally of Russia bordering Ukraine.
It’s believed to be Russia’s biggest troop deployment into Belarus since the cold war. France called the drills a “violent gesture” and Ukraine says they amount to “psychological pressure”.
Viral News: Britain’s Prince Charles has tested positive for the coronavirus for the second time.
Here in the US, the heat is on for states and public school systems to lift their indoor mask mandates. Parents are putting on the pressure to free their kids from masks, but The Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics continue to call for school masking, and some polls show that the public is generally supports masking.
Stock Ban: Virginia Democratic Rep. Abigail Spanberger and Texas Republican Rep. Chip Roy are working together pushing a ban on members of Congress trading stocks. Members of both parties say voters support the idea.
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York, said he favors the ban. “I believe this is an important issue that Congress should address.”
Some members of Congress have traded stocks based on knowledge gained from their position.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who says she does not own stocks herself, said “It is a confidence issue and if that’s what members want to do then that’s what we will do.” She said she believes a potential ban should extend to members of the Supreme Court as well.
This is a turnaround for Pelosi, who’s been under fire because her husband is a big market investor.
Five Ring Roundup: Americans had a big day. Figure skater Nathan Chen let go of his nerves and skated to gold. He completed five clean quadruple jumps. “I never thought I would actually be able to make this happen,” Chen said. “It’s hard. It’s always been a dream, of course. It’s a pretty daunting mountain.”
Chen had finished a disappointing 5th in the 2018 Olympics.
In the halfpipe, snowboarder Chloe Kim won her second gold medal with dazzling aerial tricks. In her first run she got a score no one could top for the rest of the competition.
In one of her tricks she flew 12 feet, 10 inches above the edge of the halfpipe.
Her second trick was a Frontside 1080 with a tail grab in which she completed three full rotations while grabbing the rear of her board, landing forward.
Also in Olympic news, the medal ceremony for the figure skating team competition has been delayed because a member of the winning Russian team tested positive for a banned substance. USA TODAY reports that the skater in question is a minor.
Russia already competes as the “Russian Olympic Committee” rather than under the Russian flag because they have a history of doping.
The Spin Rack: With as many as 70,000 fans expected at the Super Bowl Sunday in Los Angeles, the Department of Homeland Security is warning that a convoy of truckers protesting Covid-19 mandates might try to block the roads. — Comedian and actor Bob Saget died after accidentally hitting his head then going to sleep in a hotel room and never waking up, his family said. Saget’s family issued a statement saying that authorities “concluded that he accidentally hit the back of his head on something, thought nothing of it and went to sleep. No drugs or alcohol were involved.” — Up to 40 of 49 communication satellites newly launched by SpaceX have been knocked out of orbit by a solar storm and are headed for incineration in Earth’s atmosphere. — The House January Jan. 6thcommittee has called Peter Navarro, a White House adviser to former President Trump who has written and spoken about his work to get Congress to reject the results of the 2020 election.
The Soup Nazi: Georgie Margorie Taylor Greene, one of the dimmest bulbs in Congress, slammed the House January 6th investigating committee saying on One America News that, “Not only do we have the DC jail, which is the DC gulag, but now we have Nancy Pelosi’s gazpacho police spying on members of Congress, spying on the legislative work that we do, spying on our staffs, and spying on American citizens that want to come talk to their representatives.”
Gazpacho is chilled tomato soup.
