Trump Girls: In a long story dissecting Donald Trump’s complicated relationship with women, The NY Times says the presidential candidate has fawned over women, chased them, adored them, reviled them and objectified them. The paper says its story presents “a complex, at times contradictory portrait” of Trump.
The story begins with an anecdote about Trump meeting a woman at a party in his Florida home and immediately demanding that she change into a bikini.
The Times bases its story on 50 interviews with former employees, friends, and girlfriends, as well as written accounts and court records. The paper reports that, “Their accounts … reveal unwelcome romantic advances, unending commentary on the female form, a shrewd reliance on ambitious women, and unsettling workplace conduct.” The report goes on to say, “The interactions occurred in his offices at Trump Tower, at his homes, at construction sites and backstage at beauty pageants. They appeared to be fleeting, unimportant moments to him, but they left lasting impressions on the women who experienced them.”
The story says, “Some women found him gracious and encouraging,” but he once said to an overweight female executive “You like your candy.” It goes on, “But in many cases there was an unmistakable dynamic at play: Mr. Trump had the power, and the women did not. He had celebrity. He had wealth. He had connections. Even after he had behaved crudely toward them, some of the women sought his assistance with their careers or remained by his side.”
Nation: Eight people were killed yesterday and 44 injured when a charter bus rolled over on a south Texas highway. The driver lost control about 42 miles north of Laredo.
>Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio has been found in contempt of court for failing to cease racial profiling by his officers. For years the Maricopa County Sheriff’s department has been accused of targeting Latino’s for random stops.
World: A suicide bomber in Yemen today attacked a line of policemen standing outside their base, killing 25.
And in Iraq, Islamic State suicide bombers attacked a gas factory outside Baghdad, killing 14 people. Authorities say three car bombs blew up at the gates before six men wearing explosive belts ran in and blew up gas tanks. It was the third major bombing attack this month.
>More than 50 people were killed by lightning strikes in Bangladesh over the past several days. Many were farmers working in their fields. Bangladesh is normally prone to electrical storms, but it’s been a bad year. Some scientists theorize the situation is aggravated by deforestation and global warming.
Hyper: Developers of the Hyperloop high-speed transportation system this week conducted a test that may have brought the people mover out of the pages of science fiction into reality. The company’s test sled powered by electromagnets hit 116 mph in just 1.9 seconds. Elon Musk, the developer of the Tesla car, wants to building a tubular transportation system that will carry people and cargo at 300 mph.
Some people believe Musk may have made California’s $64 billion bullet train obsolete even before it is built.
