Tough Environment: The latest Trump administration official under the ethics microscope is Scott Pruitt, the head of the EPA who doesn’t really believe in protecting the environment.
ABC News reported that Pruitt had a sweetheart rental deal for a room in a Capitol Hill condominium partly owned by the wife of a major energy lobbyist with business before the agency. Pruitt paid a mere $50 a night in the high rent district of Washington, amounting to $6,100 over six months.
Pruitt is also under examination for taking first class air flights and bringing his security team with him around the world, even on vacation.
It’s a little early to say whether Pruitt’s job is in danger, but it’s possible.
President Trump, who likes to claim he breaks records for anything from crowd size to presidential accomplishments, is setting real records with staff turnover. Including temporary placeholders, Trump had had five communications directors, four secretaries of Health and Human Services, four national security advisers, and three secretaries of Homeland Security.
Some people have moved from one job to another, Chief of Staff John Kelly among them, but 28 have resigned or been fired since Trump became president.
Customer Complaint: President Trump escalated his attacks on Amazon yesterday with a twitter volley. “It is reported that the U.S. Post Office will lose $1.50 on average for each package it delivers for Amazon. That amounts to Billions of Dollars,” Trump wrote.
He went on, “The Failing N.Y. Times reports that “the size of the company’s lobbying staff has ballooned,” and that… …does not include the Fake Washington Post, which is used as a ‘lobbyist’ and should so REGISTER. If the P.O. ‘increased its parcel rates, Amazon’s shipping costs would rise by $2.6 Billion.’ This Post Office scam must stop. Amazon must pay real costs (and taxes) now!”
A couple of things here. There’s a lot of voodoo accounting that goes on with the Post Office and Congress helps to keep it poor. But, the USPS package service is required by law to at least break even and it actually runs a profit.
Also, CBS News dug into the records and found that the Trump campaign bought $158,000 worth of office supplies from … are you ready? — Amazon.
Second, as we have written before, this is really about The Washington Post, which is owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Trump not only tries to undermine the Post as being “Fake,” but now claims it is actually a lobbying organization for Amazon that should be required to register with the government.
Conspiracy Theory: Roseanne Barr, the Trump supporting comedian who revived her long-running sitcom last week, is also a fan of the conspiracy theories bouncing around the dark corners of the internet.
Barr tweeted this past week, “President Trump has freed so many children held in bondage to pimps all over this world. Hundreds each month. He has broken up trafficking rings in high places everywhere. notice that. I disagree on some things, but give him benefit of doubt-4 now.”
It’s not true. Not even close. It’s an evolution of the Pizzagate idiocy in which some people were convinced that Hillary Clinton was running a pedophile operation out of the basement of a Washington DC pizza restaurant.
Barr cited as proof reports from a site called Liberty, which claimed that “by the second month of Trump’s presidency, police had arrested 1500 criminals nationwide who are connected with these pedophile rings” and that “there are suspicions that not only Hollywood is involved in the pedophile rings, but also politicians.”
A lot of this stuff is echoed by an account called “Q” on the 4chan message board. “Q” claims to be a government operative with a high security clearance. It’s all internet lunacy.
The Gun Beat: The New York State legislature has passed a law making it possible for authorities to seize guns from owners accused of domestic violence. New York already had some of the strictest gun laws in the country.
Off Your Rocker: Gun loving rocker Ted Nugent has attacked the survivors of the Parkland school shooting, calling them “liars” and “poor, mushy-brained children.”
Nugent said on a conservative radio talk show, “The lies from the left, the lies from these poor, mushy-brained children who have been fed lies and parrot the lies, they are actually committing spiritual suicide because everything they recommend will cause more death and mayhem, guaranteed.”
Hoops Dreams: The fairy tale ended for Loyola Chicago yesterday, losing to Michigan 69-57. Michigan was behind 29-22 at the half but made a big comeback.
Villanova buried Kansas 95-79 to set up tomorrow night’s final with Michigan for the NCAA basketball championship.
Everybody in the Pool: This from yesterday’s White House press pool report: “No word on the presidents activities or whom he might be meeting with today. Your pooler is still waiting for WH to confirm AP and CNN report that boxing promoter and Trump friend Don King stopped by Mar-a-Lago Thursday evening.”
