Vol. 8, No. 187
Racist in Chief: President Trump has been unapologetic for saying that four upstart progressive Democratic members of Congress who have been fighting their leadership should go back to the countries they came from even though three of the four were born in the US. All four are non-white.
Trump assumes that because they are not white and have non-European names that they are foreign born. One of the four, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, said Trump “can’t conceive of an America that includes us.”
This morning Trump pressed his attack on Twitter. “When will the Radical Left Congresswomen apologize to our Country, the people of Israel and even to the Office of the President, for the foul language they have used, and the terrible things they have said. So many people are angry at them & their horrible & disgusting actions!”
Rep. Ilhan Omar, who was born in Somalia, tweeted to the President, “You are stoking white nationalism (because) you are angry that people like us are serving in Congress and fighting against your hate-filled agenda.”
Republican leaders have not condemned Trump for what he said, demonstrating again that they are cowed by the “deplorables” who make up Trump’s political base. They are unwilling to stand up for what’s right for fear of falling on the wrong side of Trump’s unquestioning admirers.
NY Timescolumnist Charles Blow writes that Trump’s “truest nature is simply being revealed, again and again, and he is using his own racism to appeal to the racism in the people who support him.”
The ICE Man Commeth: An expected sweep by immigration agents to sweep up 2,000 illegal immigrants was surprisingly quiet and under the radar yesterday. Despite a handful of arrests in some states, there was nothing approaching the mass roundups that the White House had suggested would take place.
President Trump had promised a “major operation” with raids expected in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Miami, Denver, Atlanta, Baltimore and Houston.
The Gun Beat:New Zealand’s first gun buyback following the Christchurch shooting brought more than 150 gun owners on Saturday, according to law enforcement officials.
The buyback, which took place in Christchurch, is the first of more than 250 planned across New Zealand this year. Gun owners turned in 224 recently-banned semiautomatic weapons and more than 200 banned gun parts. They were paid a total of $300,000.
Center Court:It took five hours and an historic fifth set tiebreaker for Novak Djokovic to beat Roger Federer yesterday in the men’s final at Wimbledon. It is Djokovic’s fifth Wimbledon title, and the second in a row.
Both players were pushed to the limit of their endurance and skill in what was the longest final in the history of the event that dates back to the 1870s.
“Unfortunately in these kinds of matches, one of the players has to lose,” Djokovic said. “It’s quite unreal.”
The News Roundup: Writing for The Root,Stephen A. Crockett Jr. estimates that by the end of four years, President Trump’s golfing trips may cost taxpayers $340 million. — Alan Turing, the computing pioneer who broke enemy codes during World War II and was convicted under Britain’s anti-homosexuality laws, has been chosen by the Bank of England to be the new face of its 50-pound note.
The Obit Page: Jerry Lawson, who for forty years was the lead singer of the a Capella group the Persuasions, died Wednesday in Phoenix. He was 75.
The Persuasions were one of the groups that revived the art of a Capella. Their musical instruments were their voices. Look up “Good Times” and “People get Ready” and listen to them.
Stealing First:An outfielder in the independent Atlantic League of Professional Baseball (ALPB) made history Saturday in Maryland being the first player to steal first base in the league’s history.
In a game between the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs and the Lancaster Barnstormers, Tony Thomas, 33, was at bat in the bottom of the 6th inning when a pitch bounced behind the catcher and got stuck under the backstop.
The ALBP has a new rule that says batters may “steal” first base on any pitch not caught in flight and the batter can be thrown out if he tries to run.
Thomas says he saw where the ball was “so I took off and went.”
