Vol. 2, No. 359
Pussy Riot: Two members of the Russian punk bank Pussy Riot just released from prison said they still oppose President Vladimir Putin. In a Moscow press conference, Nadezhda Tolokonnikova said, “We still want to do what we said in our last performance for which we spent two years in prison: drive him away.”
Newtown: Connecticut police agencies today are releasing a trove of documents and 911 recordings related to the Sandy Hook school shooting in Newtown. Several thousand pages of documents to be released at 3pm EST will include text, photos, and 911 calls.
Nation: A Pennsylvania appeals court overturned the conviction of a Catholic official who has spent 18 months in prison for covering up sexual abuse by priests. The conviction of Msgr. William Lynn was a landmark case in which a priest not accused of abuse himself was prosecuted for failing to deal with other priests who had a history of sexual abuse. The Superior Court of Pennsylvania reversed Lynn’s conviction saying it was “not supported by sufficient evidence.”
- President Obama signed the bi-partisan federal budget, averting the threat of another government shutdown in January. Congress will still have to pass a trillion dollar spending bill. Next up on the battle line is raising the debt ceiling again next spring.
The president also signed a defense spending bill that cracks down on sexual assault in the military and allows prisoners at Guantanamo Bay to be transferred to other countries. It’s a step toward shutting down the GitMo federal prison for terrorists, but Congress still refuses to allow the transfer of prisoners to the US.
World: A powerful car bomb in Beirut today killed six people, including the former Lebanese ambassador to the US. Mohamad Chatah. The former finance minister and ambassador, had been an open critic of the Syrian government and its ally, the Lebanese militia Hezbollah.
- A bus in Thailand plunged off one of the country’s highest bridges, killing at least 29 people. The accident happened at midnight Thursday, and authorities say they believe the driver fell asleep. The bridge is 164 feet at its highest point.
Revolving Door: CBS News Correspondent John Miller made it official that he’s leaving to work again with the new NYPD chief William Bratton. He’s probably taking an intelligence/terrorism post. Miller has jumped in and out of journalism, working for CBS, ABC, the NYPD, LAPD, and the FBI. He’s been criticized lately for what some critics say was a softball story on the NSA for 60 Minutes. Miller told the NY Times, “We went there, we asked every question we wanted to, listened to the answers, followed up as we wished, and our audience can decide what and who they believe.”
Piranha!: At least 60 people were bitten in a Christmas day Piranha frenzy in the Argentine city of Rosario. In the midst of a heat wave with temperatures at 100 degrees, thousands of people were cooling off in the Parana River, which is infested with the flesh-eating fish.
Making a List: Fashionista neat-freak Anna Wintour is also a Christmasista. Her daughter posted on Instagram that the Vogue Editor (The Devil Wears Prada) threw out the family Christmas tree because it was too messy …. before Christmas. And it was such a perfect tree.
