The First Woman: Ninety-four years after women won the right to vote in the United States, Hillary Clinton last night won enough delegates to become the first woman to be a major party’s nominee. Reaching to mark a moment in history, Clinton spoke of the women’s movement that started in Seneca Falls, NY. “Tonight’s victory is not about one person,” she said. “It belongs to generations of women and men who struggled and sacrificed and made this moment possible.”

Clinton won New Jersey by a resounding 63.9 percent and California 56 to 43 percent. She also swept New Mexico, and South Dakota, losing only Montana and North Dakota

Clinton spoke as if she was accepting Bernie Sanders’ concession, even though he hadn’t offered it. “I want to congratulate Senator Sanders for the extraordinary campaign he has run.” She said, “I know it never feels good to put your heart into a candidate, or a cause, you believe in, and come up short. I know that feeling well.”

Taking swipes at Donald Trump, Clinton said, “To be great, we can’t be small.” She said, “This election is different. It really is about who we are as a nation. It’s about millions of Americans coming together and saying we are better than this. We won’t let this happen in America.”

The Party of Chaos: The unopposed Republican Donald Trump won primaries by margins between 67 and 81 percent. His voters love him and his party leaders don’t. House Speaker Paul Ryan came out yesterday and said Donald Trump’s remarks about the Mexican heritage of a federal judge are “the textbook definition of a racist comment,” but did not withdraw his support from the rogue presidential candidate. The NY Daily News “wood” screams “I’M WITH RACIST!

Ryan’s party is crumbling. Illinois Republican Senator Mark Kirk said outright, ““I cannot and will not support my party’s nominee for president.” Arizona’s Sen. Jeff Flake said, “If Donald remains Donald, I will not vote for him.”

New York State of Mind: New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo this week waded into the Arab/Israeli conflict, issuing an executive order banning all state agencies from doing business or investing state money in organizations that support the boycott of Israel known as BDS, which stands for Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions. BDS is a movement attempting to put non-violent pressure on Israel to end the occupation of Palestinian territories and grant equal rights to Palestinians.

“This order sends the message that this state will do everything in its power to end this hateful, intolerant campaign,” Cuomo said. The Jewish vote is huge in New York, and so is support for Israel.

Cuomo’s order requires the State office of General Services to essentially assemble a blacklist of organizations “using credible information available to the public.” It’s not clear that the governor is acting properly within his power. The New York Civil Liberties Union has said, “The (Supreme) Court has also ruled that the Constitution prohibits government from conditioning eligibility for public contracts upon the political affiliation of those bidding for a contract. To legislators questioning whether this scheme is constitutional, the answer is no.”

Nation: In Michigan a pickup truck slammed into a group of bicyclists, killing five of them and injuring four. The driver ran away, but was caught. Witnesses said the truck was being driven erratically before the accident.

>Investigators say there’s no evidence that the death of an oil industry executive in a one-car crash in Oklahoma City in March was a suicide. Aubrey McClendon, the former CEO of Chesapeake Energy Corp. who had been indicted for antitrust conspiracy only the day before, drove into a bridge abutment at high speed.

The Obit Page: Actress Theresa Saldana, who became an advocate for victims after she was stabbed by a stalker in front of her West Hollywood apartment building in 1982, has died of an undisclosed illness at age 61. After playing parts in the 1980 movies “Defiance” and “Raging Bull” in 1980, Saldana attracted the attention of a deranged drifter from Scotland. She was stabbed 10 times and spent weeks in the hospital.

She continued to act after her recovery. Her biggest part was as a regular on the television series “The Commish,” but her fame was the result of that near-fatal attack.

Social Media: The NFL’s Twitter account was hacked yesterday with a message that announced Commissioner Roger Goodell had died. He hadn’t. He was playing golf. The news was over-inflated.
