Terror: At least 22 people were killed and many more wounded in a Taliban attack today at a university in northwestern Pakistan. It happened at Bacha Khan University in the town of Charsadda, about 25 miles from a school in Peshawar where the Pakistani Taliban killed 145 people in 2014. Security guards killed the attackers before they could detonate suicides vests, but students, a faculty member and four guards were killed in the assault. The Taliban in that region have been targeting educational institutions.
Permawar: Satellite images have confirmed that the Islamic State has destroyed the oldest Christian monastery in Iraq. St Elijah’s was built of stone on a hill near the northern city of Mosul about 1,400 years ago.
Dirty Water: Amid calls for his resignation, Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder apologized and pledged in his State of the State address that he would fix the poisonous water system in the city of Flint that has left some people with elevated levels of lead in their systems.
“Government failed you — federal, state and local leaders — by breaking the trust you place in us,” Snyder said.
Flint temporarily changed its water supply from the Detroit system to the Flint river to save money, but the water was so corrosive it leached lead out of the city’s pipes. Compounding the problem, both state and city officials denied that there was a problem with the odorous and discolored water coming out of people’s taps.
Snyder promised $28 million to distribute bottled water, but government could be on the hook for major water system repairs and reparations for brain-damaged children and adults with injured health.
The Supremes: The court has agreed to hear a challenge to President Obama’s executive action that would allow 5 million illegal immigrants who are the parents of citizens, or of lawful residents, to remain in the country. The President said at the time that he took action out of frustration because Congress would not reform the immigration laws. The challenge comes from a coalition of 26 states, led by the attorney general of Texas.
Politics: Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has endorsed Donald Trump for President because Trump is the thinking man’s Sarah Palin. In a speech that was both rousing and rambling in Ames, Iowa, Palin said, “Looking around at all of you, you hard working Iowa families, you farm families and teachers and teamsters and cops and cooks, you rock and rollers and holy rollers! You all make the world go around and now our cause is one.”
Standing behind her, Trump looked like he didn’t know what to make of it.
Ralph Reed, chairman of the Faith and Freedom Coalition said, “Palin’s brand among evangelicals is as gold as the faucets in Trump tower.” And just as tasteful, don’t you think?
>Iowa’s Republican Gov. Terry Branstad urged the defeat of Ted Cruz in his state’s political caucuses because, “he is the biggest opponent of renewable fuels,” and “he is heavily financed by big oil.” Iowa’s farms feed the ethanol industry. Branstad said, “I think it would be a big mistake for Iowa to support him.”
>And this is true, too. Really. Ted Cruz has shot a gun-friendly commercial with “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson in which the Texas senator puts black greasepaint on his face and blasts away at Daffy. Robertson says his criteria for a candidate include “would they kill a duck, put ’em in a pot and make ’em a good duck gumbo.” He tells Cruz, “You’re one of us, my man.”
PolitiShock: Bernie Sanders now leads Hillary Clinton in polls for both the Iowa Caucuses and the New Hampshire Primary. Iowa; 47-44 Bernie; New Hampshire, 53-39 Bernie. Clinton says she always thought it would be close, but she probably never expected to be close and behind.
