Vol.2, No. 259
Syria: After three days of talks in Geneva, the US and Russia have reached an agreement to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons by the middle of 2014. Doing it in the midst of Syria’s civil war will require the cooperation of both the Syrian government and rebels forces. Under the agreement the first inspection of Syria’s chemical weapons must be done by the end of November. The US believes Syria has 1,000 metric tons of chemical weapons at 45 sites.
World: Analysts believe N. Korea is restarting its Yongbyon nuclear power plant. The reactor is capable of making plutonium for nuclear weapons. Yongbyon already had produced enough plutonium for 8-10 weapons when it was shut down in 2007 in an arms-for-aid deal.
National: Four people are dead in Colorado, and some small mountain towns remain cut off by destroyed roads and bridges after torrential rains and flooding. The streets were running with water as thousands of people were forced to leave their homes for higher ground. About 170 people are missing or unaccounted for.
- Seaside Park’s 100—year-old carousel was among the businesses and landmarks lost in Thursday’s New Jersey Boardwalk fire. The fire burned five blocks and 20-30 businesses. Some had only recently re-opened after Hurricane Sandy damaged them last fall.
No Soup For You: The government of Hong Kong says it will no longer serve shark fin at official events. The World Wildlife Funs says some species of sharks are depleted by 60-70% because of the demand for their fins. Shark fin, though pretty much tasteless, was the dish of ancient emperors because it was hard to get. In modern life it is served at weddings and banquets as a sign of respect and honor for guests.
Drive: The California legislature has voted to allow illegal immigrants to have driver’s licenses. Backers of the bill believe it will improve road safety. The licenses will be marked “for driving only”, and not for purposes of identification.
Obit Page: Ray Dolby, the inventor who took the hiss out of recorded sound, has died in San Francisco at age 80. Dolby’s sound-improving devices were used in everything from stereos to movie theaters. His creations made him a billionaire.
Friendly Skies: United Airlines says it will honor the tickets it accidentally gave away over several hours Thursday on its website. The airline tickets, listed for a price of $0.00, were snapped up by an undisclosed number of people for only the TSA security fee. United won’t say how many tickets were sold or how much money they lost. They can make it up in lunches and baggage fees.
