Screw Your Optics: President Trump called for armed guards at so-called “soft targets” and a renewed enforcement of the death penalty after a gunman killed 11 people and wounded six at a Pittsburgh synagogue.

“If there was an armed guard inside the temple, they would have been able to stop him,” the President told reporters. He also said “When people do this, they should get the death penalty. Anybody that does a thing like this to innocent people that are in temple or in church … they should be suffering the ultimate price, they should pay the ultimate price.”

Then last night Trump was tweeting about the World Series.

Police say Robert Bowers, 46, entered the synagogue armed with an assault rifle and three handguns. Witnesses said he shouted anti-Semitic slurs as he fired. Bowers eventually barricaded himself inside the building and four responding police officers were among the wounded.

Bowers also was wounded and gave up. He’s been charged with 29 counts, including hate crimes and 11 counts of murder.

Bowers has a history of anti-Semitism on a website called “Gab” and was recently targeting the Jewish organization HIAS, which is planning a Shabbat ceremony for refugees.

Hours before the rampage inside the Tree of Life synagogue, Bowers’ account was posted with the message,  “HIAS likes to bring invaders in that kill our people. I can’t sit by and watch my people get slaughtered. Screw your optics, I’m going in.”

Gab: As we said, Bowers used the social platform “Gab,” which was established in 2016 as an uncensored form of Twitter on which users can say anything they want. It’s a magnet for neo-Nazis and haters.

Bowers’ account was taken offline, but with just a little browsing we found this from someone posting as “Hill of Tyr”: “American citizen, what a generic fucking meaningless title. Every god damn animal on the planet is views as an american citizen to someone. that horde of psychopathic south americans about to storm our border are viewed as American citizens by the left. You think I should give a fuck about such a meaningless title?”

And this under the name Herb Hasselman:

The Series: Both the Dodgers and Boston had three run homers last night in the fourth game of the World Series. The Red Sox were down 4-0 until pinch hitter Mitch Moreland hit theirs. Boston’s Steve Pearce hit another in the 8th inning.

Then Boston had a five-run rally in the top of the 9^th. Boston won it 9-6 to take a 3-1 lead in the Series. Game five is tonight in Los Angeles.

The Problem with Apu: The writers and creator of “The Simpsons” cartoon show are preparing to write out the Indian-American character Apu, who has come under attack as a stereotype. The character was the subject of a damning documentary entitled “The Problem With Apu,” which said he embodies the stereotype of the Indian with a thick accent who runs a Kwik-E-Mart.

His full name, by the way, is Apu Nahasapeemapetilon.
