London Attack: Two men shouting “God is Great” hacked to death a British soldier several hundred feet from the Royal Artillery barracks in a bizarre incident in London yesterday. Witnesses caught the two on video making no effort to get away, standing around the scene holding bloody knives and a cleaver. One of the men said, “We swear by the mighty Allah that we will never stop fighting you until you leave us alone.” Both men were shot and wounded when they threatened arriving police officers. The suspects were previously known to authorities.
Remote Control: President Obama is expected to announce today that he will dial back the use of unmanned drones in the “war on terror”. This comes a day after the government admitted killing four American citizens in drone attacks, including Muslim cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, who died in a drone strike in Yemen. Killing American terror suspects rather than capturing and charging them has been a controversy since 9/11.
National: An FBI agent in Florida shot and killed a friend of Boston bomber Tamarlan Tsarnaev yesterday after the man stabbed the agent during an interview, the FBI reported. The man was identified as Ibragim Todashev of Orlando, a Chechen who once lived in Boston and knew Tsarnaev through martial arts fighting. The FBI says that Todashev was admitting that he Tsarnaev were involved with the murder of three men in a Boston suburb in 2011 when he assaulted the agent. Two Massachusetts state troopers and other law enforcement people were present in the apartment during the shooting.
- The IRS official in charge of non-profit application invoked her Fifth Amendment rights against self-incrimination before a Congressional hearing yesterday. Lois Lerner read a short statement saying “I have not done anything wrong. Usually a witness cannot speak in their own defense if they will not answer questions. But the committee investigating IRS targeting of conservative groups let her leave.
Sources Say: The Obama administration is under fire now for treating a Fox News reporter as a criminal suspect in the leak of a 2009 story involving North Korea. Rosen was tracked and his emails were opened. The Washington press corps is outraged that a reporter would be investigated for doing the work of a reporter.
Chop Shop: Tattooed motorcycle builder Jesse James, the ex-husband who cheated on Sandra Bullock, ex-boyfriend who cheated on tattoo artist Kat Von D, cut off the end of his right pinky in shop accident. Then he Tweeted pictures of it like he was having a good time.
