Promised Land: A 16-year-old Palestinian boy was among four Palestinians killed yesterday trying to carry out stabbing attacks on Israelis. One of the attackers was wounded trying to stab a police officer. When an officer tried to help the injured attacker, he pulled out a second knife and then was shot again and killed.
In the past month eight Israelis have been killed in the stabbing attacks and 19 of the Palestinian assailants have been killed. Many of the attackers come from East Jerusalem where the residents are frustrated about their land being carved up by Israeli settlers. They feel boxed in, pushed around, and ignored by both the Israeli government and their own Palestinian Authority.
Narcos: The Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman, known as “El Chapo,” who escaped prison through an underground tunnel in July, is injured and on the run after an attempt to re-capture him, authorities say. They report that Guzman was injured on his face and one leg, but they don’t say how.
Guzman escaped prison through a precision-engineered tunnel dug from a mile away right up through the floor of his shower stall. The tunnel was equipped with a motorcycle on tracks for a quick getaway.
Deep South: Hillary Clinton was campaigning in Alabama yesterday, slamming the state’s closure of 31 drivers license bureaus in largely black areas that are a primary source of government ID required to vote in that state. Clinton said, “Fifty years after Rosa Parks sat and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. marched and John Lewis bled, it is hard to believe that we are back having this same debate.”
Survivor: Christopher Mintz, the Army veteran shot five times trying to help fellow students during the Roseburg, Oregon college shooting has written on Facebook that the gunman “was so nonchalant through it all, like he was playing a video game and showed no emotion.”
Mintz wrote that after helping some students escape he returned to classrooms where the gunman popped out of a door. Mintz wrote, “The shots knocked me to the ground and felt like a truck hit me. He shot me again while I was on the ground and hit my finger, and said ‘that’s what you get for calling the cops.’”
Mintz was shot five times, the bullets breaking both legs and just missing his aorta. Mintz wrote, “I yelled ‘its my kids birthday man’ he pointed the gun right at my face and then he retreated back into the class. I’m still confused at why he didn’t shoot me again.”
The Boys of October: The Kansas City Royals lead Toronto 2-0 in the American league baseball playoffs. The NY Mets beat the Chicago Cubs 4-2 in their first National League playoff game.
The Obit age: Skip Yowell, an outdoorsman who was a founder of the JanSport backpack company, has died at age 69. Starting in 1969, JanSport bags have lugged millions of pounds of camping gear and schoolbooks. Co-founder Murray Pletz had promised his girlfriend Jan Lewis that if she married him, he would name the company after her. She did.
Standup Guy: Comedian Tracy Morgan returned to television last night as the host of Saturday Night Live in his first major appearance since a horrific car accident in the spring of 2014. In his opening monologue Morgan said, “People were wondering: Can he speak? Does he have 100 percent mental capacity? But the truth is, I never did. I might actually be a few points higher now.”
TrumpTweet: “Jeb and Marco OWE IT to their contributors to admit they have NO CHANCE of winning, and figure out how to PAY BACK everyone”
