Spin City, Facebook Breakup

The Merry-Go-Round:Just hours after President Trump claimed executive privilege over the entire redacted Special Counsel report, the House Judiciary Committee voted to find Attorney Gen. William Barr in contempt for not handing over the report and the Senate Intelligence Committee subpoenaed Don Jr. to appear. There are two days left in the week.

“Our fight is about defending the rights of Congress, as an independent branch, to hold the president, any president, accountable,” said New York Rep. Jerrold Nadler, the Judiciary Committee chairman, during a heated debate that ended with a vote — shockingly — along party lines.

The Justice Department described the assertion of privilege as  “protective” to allow Trump time to fully review the report and its supporting evidence to make a final determination. But Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement, “The American people see through Chairman Nadler’s desperate ploy to distract from the president’s historically successful agenda and our booming economy. Neither the White House nor Attorney General Barr will comply with Chairman Nadler’s unlawful and reckless demands.”

The White House is in full stonewall mode, refusing to hand over the Mueller report or the President’s tax returns as demanded by the House.

On the other side of the capitol, the Senate Intelligence Committee wants Donald Trump Jr., to testify in the continuing inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The big question for junior is whether he told his father about the offer by a Russian lawyer to provide dirt on Hillary Clinton. Don Jr. has previously testified that he didn’t tell his father, but Trump’s jailed former lawyer Michael Cohen says he was present when junior told his father.

The Social Network:One of the founders of Facebook, argues in an opinion piece published today in The NY Timesthat Facebook has grown so large and influential under the leadership of just one man that it’s time to break up the company.

Chris Hughes says, “Because Facebook so dominates social networking, it faces no market-based accountability. This means that every time Facebook messes up, we repeat an exhausting pattern: first outrage, then disappointment and, finally, resignation.”

Hughes says that his friend Mark Zuckerberg is a good man, but because he owns 60 percent of the company, and Facebook also owns Instagram and WhatsApp, Zuckerberg controls far too much of the social network.

Hughes points out that no new social app has been started since 2011. They can’t compete against the Facebook juggernaut. He says, “The most problematic aspect of Facebook’s power is Mark’s unilateral control over speech. There is no precedent for his ability to monitor, organize and even censor the conversations of two billion people.”

The Hermit Kingdom:North Korea launched two short-range missiles yesterday, the South says. It’s the second set of launches this week. Kim Jong-un is trying to send a message, but he’s not using his words.

The Roundup:Musician R. Kelly spent much of yesterday in court explaining to a judge that he didn’t respond to a lawsuit brought by one of his sexual abuse accusers because he is illiterate.  — A brother, sister and niece of environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. published an opinion criticizing him for campaigning against vaccination, saying he has been disseminating “dangerous misinformation.” — Voters in Denver decided to decriminalize hallucinogenic mushrooms.

Keeping Up With the Royals: The new member of the royal family born to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle is more name than baby. He’s Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor. The “Archie” instead of “Archibald” is shockingly informal for the Brit royalty, but his mother is an American.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
