“Soldiers of the Caliphate”

War in Paris: Investigators have begun to identify the Paris attackers, one of whom carried a Syrian passport and had recently passed through Greece as a refugee. Three men believed to be connected to the attacks were arrested in Molenbeek, Belgium, which has become a hotbed for radical Islam and where authorities believe the operation was planned.

French President Francois Hollande declared three days of national mourning as troops patrolled the city.

As of this morning 129 people were dead and 352 injured, 99 of them critically. One was an American college student, Nohemi Gonzalez, 23, a junior at Cal State University, Long Beach, who was spending a semester at the State College of Design in France.

The Islamic State says it is fighting a religious war. They issued a statement saying, in part, “Soldiers of the Caliphate (may Allah strengthen and support it) set out targeting the capital of prostitution and vice, the lead carrier of the cross in Europe — Paris. This group of believers were youth who divorced the worldly life and advanced towards their enemy hoping to be killed for Allah’s sake, doing so in support of His religion, His Prophet.”

Authorities say the attackers worked in three teams. Instead of just one large target, they hit bars, restaurants, and a crowded theater where Parisians and visitors were enjoying a Friday night in Paris. They attacked normal life.

The War at Home: Donald Trump was the first presidential candidate to jump out front and say Parisians should have been carrying guns. At a campaign event in Texas he told his audience, “You can say what you want, but if they had guns, if our people had guns, if they were allowed to carry …” Trump said, pausing as the crowd applauded, ” … it would’ve been a much, much different situation.”

Carly Fiorina thumped President Obama for having said ISIS is contained. “They are not a JV team, Mr. President,” Fiorina said in Orlando, Fla. “They are not contained. They are at our shores and their measure of victory is the body count.”

The Democrats: In the shadow of the Paris attacks, the remaining three Democratic presidential candidates debated in Iowa last night, and not surprisingly, they are all squarely against terrorism.

Interestingly, Hillary Clinton followed the lead of President George W. Bush, declining to say the war on terror is a war with Islam. “I don’t think we’re at war with Islam,” she said. “I don’t think we are at war with all Muslims.”

Statements from the Islamic State clearly say they are waging a religious war, but Clinton said, “It’s very difficult when you deal with — ISIS and organizations like that whose, whose behavior is so barbaric and so vicious– that it doesn’t seem to have any purpose other than lust for killing and power.”

Bernie Sanders said, “I think we need major reform in the military making it more cost effective but also focusing on the real crisis that faces us. The Cold War is over and our focus has got to be on intelligence, increased manpower, fighting international terrorism.”

Dukes of Hazard: Professional tough girl Ronda Rousey was knocked out in the second round in Melbourne, Australia last night, losing the women’s bantamweight ultimate fighting title match to Holly Holm. Ain’t that a kick in the head.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
