Softball in Football, AirAsia Not Terror

Under Pressure: The NFL is investigating today whether the New England Patriots used under-inflated balls that were easier to grip in yesterday’s rainy crushing of Indianapolis. It wouldn’t be shocking. Coach Bill Belichick has been caught cheating before.

The Patriots will be headed to Arizona to meet the returning champion Seattle Seahawks in the 49th Super Bowl Feb. 1st. That’s Super Bowl XLIX.

In pouring rain in Massachusetts, quarterback Tom Brady and the Patriots dismantled the Indianapolis Colts 45-7. The Patriots’ trickery included a touchdown pass to a lumbering left tackle.

Also in a sloppy game played in wet weather, Seattle came from 0-16 at the half to beat Green Bay 28-22. The last two minutes of regular time were one of the miracles of football. With Green Bay players patting each other on the back on the sidelines, Seattle scored to make it 14-19, then recovered an onside kick, scored again, and made a two-point conversion. Green Bay tied it with a field goal but Seattle drove it home in their first possession in overtime.

Nation: Talk host Oprah Winfrey and the stars of the movie “Selma” re-staged the historic civil rights march yesterday, honoring Martin Luther King Day, and probably to promote the movie. On March 7, 1965 marchers intent on walking from Selma 50 miles to the capital in Montgomery were met by police with clubs and teargas. Fourteen days later Martin Luther King, Jr. finished the march leading a crowd of 50,000.

> The NY Times reports that the NSA drilled into North Korea’s computer system back in 2010 and the evidence gleaned from that hacking is part of what convinces the administration that North Korea is responsible for the attack on Sony Pictures.

AirAsia: The crash of AirAsia 8501 was not the result of terrorism, according to Indonesian investigators who have listened to the jet’s cockpit recorders. The recordings indicate that the pilots were dealing with a problem, possibly bad weather, and were trying to regain control of the plane.

Crosshairs: The Iraq war movie “American Sniper” hauled in more than $90 million over the weekend, a January record. But the movie itself is under fire for putting a glossy patriotic image on a man who may have enjoyed killing at least 160 people during his tours in Iraq. Part of the complexity of the real Chris Kyle is that he was also a braggart, some of whose stories could never be verified. He claimed he once shot and killed two men in Texas who tried to hijack his pickup truck and no one can find evidence of it.

#Fired: Veteran reporter and CNN anchor Jim Clancy has exited the network after a messy and opinionated series of tweets he posted about the massacre at Charlie Hebdo magazine in Paris. News outlets encourage their people to raise their profile using social media. Then they fire the reporters who use social media for their primary purpose; wisecracking and opinionating.

Downhill: American skier Lindsey Vonn today won her 63d World Cup race, breaking the 35-year-old record held by Austria’s Annemarie Moser-Proell. Vonn won a super-G race in Italy. She has come back from career threatening knee injuries to become once again a dominating racer on the World Cup circuit. Boyfriend Tiger Woods was waiting at the finish line.

Sky High: An unidentified buyer has paid more than $100 million for a duplex on Manhattan’s 57th Street, a New York record for the price of an apartment. It’s on the 89th and 90th floors in what’s known as “Billionaires’ Row.” The previous record for a New York Apartment was $88 million paid by a Russian manure magnate, which begs the question of how much manure you need to turn it into a pile of dough that big.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
