Flight 370: The search for the missing Malaysian Airlines jet appears to be in disarray as authorities have given conflicting reports about whether the plane took a hard left turn off course. The jet with 239 people on board should have flown northeast over the South China Sea, but now the search is both east and west of the Malaysia peninsula. The airline says all appeared normal in the last communication when the jet replied to controllers, “All right, roger that.”
Breaking: A building exploded and collapsed this morning in East Harlem in NY City. At least 11 people are injured.
What’s Good for the Country: The NY Times reports that General Motors may be under criminal investigation for failure to disclose dangerous defects in its cars. In particular it involves the company’s handling of faulty ignition switches that have been linked to 31 accidents and 13 deaths. The company learned back in 2004 that if the driver’s keychain was loaded with objects the weight could pull the ignition switch and turn it off. GM recalled 1.6 million vehicles around the world to fix the problem only last month.
Nation: In an unusual public dispute with the CIA, Sen. Diane Feinstein accused the CIA of removing documents from Senate computers and trying to intimidate the Senate investigation into possible use of torture on terror suspects during the George W. Bush administration. Feinstein, chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said, “The interrogations and the conditions of confinement at the CIA detention sites were far different and far more harsh than the way the CIA had described them to us.” Feinstein detailed CIA obstruction, including the destruction of videotapes of some interrogations. CIA Director John Brennan denies spying on the Senate. This is a serious accusation from Feinstein who’s been a big supporter of the intelligence agencies.
>The administration announced that enrollment in Obamacare has reached 4.2 million, up 22 percent since January. But Obamacare still lags in getting young healthy people into the tent, and is far from the 6 million enrollees projected by March 31.
The Obit Page: Joe McGinnis, who wrote the landmark “The Selling of the President 1968” about Richard Nixon’s presidential campaign, died in Massachusetts at age 71. He also wrote the huge bestseller “Fatal Vision” about Army Dr. Jeffrey McDonald who was convicted of slaughtering his own family in 1970. McGinnis was at times criticized for befriending his subjects before dissecting them in print. More recently he moved in next door to former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s home to write an unauthorized biography abut her.
Buried in Jersey: New Jersey, the barrel farm state, has blocked Tesla motors from selling its electric cars direct to customers. Tesla is fighting states all over the country for the right to sell cars direct to the public. New Jersey says selling cars through dealers increases competition and protects the buyer. Tesla has two stores in New Jersey and doesn’t sell through franchised dealers.
No Rose: After finishing the season without proposing or declaring his love, the latest “Bachelor” on ABC has been declared by disappointed fans as “the worst ever”. Let’s see… Vain Venezuelan soccer player agrees to do a national television show in which he can hook up with any or all of 27 single beautiful women. He insults gays, is so horrible that two women leave the show, and the viewing public still expects romance, character, and a happy ending.
