School Shooting Arrest, Male Idiot Theory

Nation: Police early this morning arrested a 22-year-old suspect in the shooting yesterday of four students at a Portland, Ore. high school for troubled kids. They had stopped his car at 1:30 in the morning and found that he had a handgun. No name was released.

The shooting happened outside the school. One 16-year-old girl was critically injured in the shooting. Two boys were listed in fair condition and a second girl was grazed by a bullet.

Ferguson Fallout: Thousands of demonstrators are collecting in Washington DC today for a march to protest police killings of unarmed black men. More demonstrations are expected in New York.

Politics: The Washington Post reports that former Florida Governor Jeb Bush is sending increasing signals that he will run for president and may even announce his intentions within a month. The paper reports that the son and brother of two former presidents is closing out business interests that would be a conflict with being in politics once again.

>The Senate is at work today trying to pass a $1.1 trillion spending bill to keep the government running. One of several points of contention is a Republican effort to defund President Obama’s immigration reform.

Ebola: Sierra Leone has banned public Christmas and New Year’s celebrations in an effort to help stop further spread of the epidemic. The government said it will deploy troops to stop or break up public gatherings. Only a quarter of Sierra Leone is Christian, but they like to celebrate. Sierra Leone, with nearly 1800 deaths, is second to hardest hit Liberia for Ebola fatalities.

World: The same Pope Francis who earlier this week told a little boy all dogs go to heaven has declined a meeting with the Dalai Lama to avoid offending China. The Dalai Lama escaped Tibet when it was overrun by China in 1959 and Chinese leaders get irritated when foreign leaders meet with him. The Pope wants better relations between China and the Catholic Church, so to hell with Tibet.

>The third wife of Thailand’s royal prince has resigned her position in the royalty as the result of a growing corruption scandal. Princess Srirasmi was already estranged from her husband, Crown Prince Vajiralongkor. Four of Srirasmi’s siblings and three other relatives have been detained on suspicion of corruption. Journalists are unable to explain exactly what’s going on because it’s against the law in Thailand to defame the royal family.

The Darwin Report: A study published in the British Medical Journal concludes that men are idiots who do stupid things. The study examined 318 winners of The Darwin Award given to people who get killed doing dumb stuff. Some recent winners: Two men stomped to death taking a selfie with a wild elephant; the man who accidentally drank gasoline then lit a cigarette to get rid of the taste.

The study says that, “According to “male idiot theory” (MIT) many of the differences in risk seeking behavior, emergency department admissions, and mortality may be explained by the observation that men are idiots and idiots do stupid things.” The study also notes that the Darwinian elimination of idiots improves the male species.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
