Right-winger Arrested, Megyn Kelly Out
Saturday, October 27, 2018
Vol. 7, No. 293
Anger Management: The man arrested for sending a string of mail bombs to political critics of President Trump is a big fan of the President with a criminal record, including a threat to blow up a utility company.
He seems to be emotionally unbalanced.
Four more bombs were discovered yesterday, addressed to New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker; former director of national intelligence James Clapper Jr.; Calif. Sen. Kamala Harris; and Tom Steyer, a California millionaire running a campaign to impeach the President.
A fingerprint on one of the bomb packages and DNA led the FBI quickly to the arrest of 56-year-old Cesar Altieri Sayoc Jr. in the parking lot of an auto parts store near Ft. Lauderdale. He’s a troubled right-wing rager who has attended Trump rallies and posted on social media about immigrants, gun control, and Democratic politicians.
Sayoc has a bent toward white supremacy even though he is part Filipino and has claimed he’s Seminole Indian. He is believed to have lived in his white van plastered with images of Trump, Vice President Pence, the American flag, and the face of Hillary Clinton in the crosshairs of a rifle sight. In the lower left corner of one window, a sticker says, “CNN Sucks.” That’s one of the frequent chants at Trump political rallies.
Trump bemoaned on Twitter yesterday that the uproar over the bomber has thwarted the Republican midterm political campaign. He wrote, “Republicans are doing so well in early voting, and at the polls, and now this ‘Bomb’ stuff happens and the momentum greatly slows – news not talking politics. Very unfortunate, what is going on.”
By the way, how would he know Republicans are doing well in early voting? The votes aren’t counted yet.
Last night Trump opened a rally in Charlotte, NC, with a condemnation of violence and a call for political unity before he launched into his standard attacks, including leading the crowd to chant “Lock her her up!, Lock her up!” about Hillary Clinton. She was one of the people targeted with a pipe bomb this week.
Cancelled: As expected, NBC News has taken its $17 million host Megyn Kelly off the 9 am hour of “Today” and appears to be negotiating her exit following her gaffe about the acceptability of dressing up in blackface for Halloween. She didn’t see a problem with it.
Kelly, who was one of the razor-edged voices of the right for Fox News, was always miscast at NBC, particularly for morning television. Fingernails on the blackboard. Here’s what we said about NBC’s decision when they hired her away from Fox in January 2017: “It’s also a risk for Kelly, who might end up with less power and profile at a major broadcast network than she did on cable.”
Permawar: Israel responded with air strikes today after a volley of rockets was fired from the Gaza Strip overnight. The Palestinian organization Hamas is believed to be responsible for the rockets but Israel says they are backed by Iran.
In a military smackdown, Israeli jets hit more than 80 targets.
The Wall:As part of the Trump campaign to build his southern border wall, Secretary of Homeland Security Kierstjen Nielsen spoke yesterday at the completion of renovations on an existing section of wall.
The administration is claiming the wall is getting built, but no new wall has been built under the Trump presidency.
Nielsen said, “Let me be clear: Walls work. That’s not my opinion, it’s not a tagline, it’s not a political statement — it’s a fact.”
What Goes Up: The Dow Jones dropped 180 points yesterday, a day after going up 401 points, which was a day after going down 608 points.
The Series: In a baseball marathon, the Dodgers beat Boston 3-2 last night in Los Angeles, bringing the World Series to 2-1 in favor of the Red Sox. The game went 18 innings and lasted a post-season record of 7 hours and 20 minutes.
The entire 1939 World Series finished in less time, just 7 hours, 5 minutes, but that was before television commercials.
