Resistance from Within, Final Notes

Resistance from Within: Members of President Trump’s own administration are working to thwart his most dangerous plans and inclinations, according to an opinion essay published in The NY Times. The article titled, “I Am Part of the Resistance Inside the Trump Administration” is attributed to an anonymous “senior official in the Trump administration.”

The author says, “We believe our first duty is to this country, and the president continues to act in a manner that is detrimental to the health of our republic.” The essay also says the cabinet has discussed invoking the 25thAmendment to remove Trump.

The article is a stunning accusation from within the Trump administration that the President himself is a danger to the country. It is also groundbreaking that The NY Timesdecided to publish it while protecting the identity of the author.

The writer echoes some of what Bob Woodward says in his new book about the Trump administration, that some of Trump’s closest staff and appointees are trying to minimize the damage he does.

Trump denounced the article late yesterday in front of a gathering of cheering law enforcement officers.  He later tweeted, “If the GUTLESS anonymous person does indeed exist, the Times must, for National Security purposes, turn him/her over to government at once!”

This morning he tweeted, “The Deep State and the Left, and their vehicle, the Fake News Media, are going Crazy – & they don’t know what to do. The Economy is booming like never before, Jobs are at Historic Highs, soon TWO Supreme Court Justices & maybe Declassification to find Additional Corruption. Wow!”

The anonymous official goes on to say, “The root of the problem is the president’s amorality. Anyone who works with him knows he is not moored to any discernible first principles that guide his decision making.”

What follows is a selection of some of the most damning quotes:

> “From the White House to executive branch departments and agencies, senior officials will privately admit their daily disbelief at the commander in chief’s comments and actions. Most are working to insulate their operations from his whims.”

> “Meetings with him veer off topic and off the rails, he engages in repetitive rants, and his impulsiveness results in half-baked, ill-informed and occasionally reckless decisions that have to be walked back.”

> “It may be cold comfort in this chaotic era, but Americans should know that there are adults in the room. We fully recognize what is happening. And we are trying to do what’s right even when Donald Trump won’t.”

> “The bigger concern is not what Mr. Trump has done to the presidency but rather what we as a nation have allowed him to do to us. We have sunk low with him and allowed our discourse to be stripped of civility.”

Judicial Restraint: In what might otherwise have been the lead story of the day, Supreme Court candidate Brett Kavanaugh refused to tell a Senate panel whether he believes a sitting President may be forced to testify in a criminal investigation or if the President has the power to pardon himself for crimes.

“I’m not going to answer hypothetical questions of that sort,” Kavanaugh answered to a question from Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont about pardons.

That’s a critical issue to Democrats, who fear that Kavanaugh might side with the man who appointed him if a case involving President Trump lands in front of the court.

Kavanaugh did, however, begin his day of grilling by declaring that “no one is above the law.”

Voter Restraint: In a sweeping hunt for immigrants who may have voted illegally, Federal prosecutors have issued subpoenas demanding that millions of North Carolina voter records be turned over to immigration authorities by Sept. 25th.

It appears to be a reflection of President Trump’s claim of widespread illegal voting, but what sparked the investigation isn’t publicly known.

In the Event of Air Sickness: An Emirates airliner was quarantined at JFK airport in New York yesterday after as many as 100 passengers and crew fell ill during the flight. Most of those who became sick had a cough and in some cases, a fever. Seven members of the crew and three passengers were taken to a hospital.

The aircraft was carrying 521 passengers. Many of those who were ill were returning from the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca.

Final Notes: The great singer/songwriter Paul Simon says he has written his last song and is more interested in exploring his dreams than writing new music.

Simon told National Public Radio, “What I’m really interested in on a personal level are my dreams. I have a long history, really going back to like when I’m four, of violence dreams. Those dreams, they got so intense a few years ago that I took a trip down to Brazil to see this healer, John of God.”

He said, “We don’t have the capacity to understand the great mysteries of life and God or no God or infinity, we just can’t get it. It’s beyond us, but that’s fine. We’re not meant to get that. But the pursuit is so interesting. That, I think, it’s life sustaining and I think when you lose the interest in that pursuit you’re finished.”

The “Great” President

Monday, March 30, 2020

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
