Vol. 2, No. 128
National: The three women held prisoner in a Cleveland house for 10 years or more were released from the hospital this morning. One of them is Amanda Berry, whose case was widely publicized when she disappeared at age 17 after calling home to say she was returning from work at Burger King. She’s now 26 and has a daughter. One woman was 18 or 19 when she was taken and is now 32. The case broke when a neighbor answered a woman screaming and broke open the front door. He said, “I knew something was wrong when a little pretty white girl ran into a black man’s arms.” Berry had difficulty convincing a 911 operator who she was. A 52-year-old man who lives in the house and his two brothers have been arrested.
> The Air Force Lt. Colonel in charge of preventing sexual assault has been charged with sexual assault, accused of attacking a woman in a parking lot. From the look of his face in the mug shot, she knew how to fight.
World: Bangladesh has agreed to make major worker safety reforms in the wake of the garment factory collapse that took 705 lives and still counting. The plan that would have to be approved by parliament would re-locate dangerous factories, retrain injured workers, and allow for collective bargaining. Many US retailers sell clothes sewn in Bangladesh.
Bombers: The teenager accused of lying to investigators in the Boston Marathon bombing was released on $100,000 bail. Robel Phillipos, 19, of Cambridge, Mass. will have to wear a GPS bracelet and stay with his mother. Two teenagers accused of disposing of evidence remain in custody.
Plastics, Son: A Texas company has performed what is believed to be the first test firing of a gun made almost entirely with a 3-D printer that builds three-dimensional objects with plastic. The gun requires just two metal parts easily made by hand. The inventor says he will put the computer blueprints online so anyone who wants to can make a gun that has no serial number or traceable manufacturer.
Class Act: Girlfriend-beater Chris Brown told an Australian radio host that it’s finally over between him and singer Rihanna. “I mean, at the end of the day, shawty doing her thang, she on the road,” Brown said. “I’m just gonna do me. I’m a grown man. Just gotta fast forward.” She’ll miss him.
The Time of Your Life: The official ABBA museum opened in Stockholm today, enshrining the 1970s Swedish music group that was the blonde country’s biggest contribution to culture since meatballs. Guests can perform with a hologram of the band and download the video to be forever remembered as a Dancing Queen.
