“Quick and Violent,” Party of Trump

Quick and Violent: President Trump told a group of evangelicals at a White House Prayer dinner that if Republicans lose the majority this fall his opponents will react “quickly and violently.”

Trump once again was whipping up fear of some vague threat to consolidate his support.

Someone attending the meeting recorded the President’s remarks and released them. It was not fully clear who or what Trump was talking about. He said, “This November 6 election is very much a referendum on not only me, it’s a referendum on your religion, it’s a referendum on free speech and the First Amendment.” He continued, taking aim at the Antifa anti-fascist movement, “It’s not a question of like or dislike, it’s a question that they will overturn everything that we’ve done and they will do it quickly and violently. And violently. There is violence. When you look at Antifa — these are violent people.”

The Party of Trump: While Democrats talk hopefully about a “blue wave” in November, primaries and special elections have proven that the Republican Party is firmly the party of Trump.

The Trump-backed candidate Rep. Ron DeSantiswon the nomination for governor while Gov. Rick Scott won the nomination to face incumbent Democrat Bill Nelson for the Senate in what is expected to be a close race.

In Arizona, Rep. Martha McSally, a former fighter pilot, won the primary for Arizona’s open US Senate seat by clinging to Trump.

Interestingly in Florida, the Democratic nominee for governor is Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, a black man who favors single-payer national healthcare and impeaching President Trump. That sets up what amounts to a proxy war between the Party of Trump and the Democratic Party of Bernie Sanders.

Google It: Trump complained yesterday that the Google search engine is rigged so that bad news I what pops up first when you search “Trump News.” He tweeted, “Republican/Conservative & Fair Media is shut out. Illegal? 96% of results on ‘Trump News’ are from National Left-Wing Media, very dangerous.”

This came just after he shot himself in the foot refusing to say anything nice about the late Sen. John McCain. Trump tends to make his own bad news and make it worse. If you googled “Trump News” yesterday afternoon, what topped the search was Trump complaining about Google.

His tweets also said, somewhat ominously, “Google & others are suppressing voices of Conservatives and hiding information and news that is good. They are controlling what we can & cannot see. This is a very serious situation-will be addressed!”

Trump’s complaint appears to be based on an article by PJ Media’s Paula Bolyard published over the weekend with the headline: “96 Percent of Google Search Results for ‘Trump’ News Are from Liberal Media Outlets.” Bolyard admits that she doesn’t know how Google’s search algorithm works. CNN’s Chris Cillizza writes, “This is the essence of all conspiracy theories: You can’t prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am wrong, so I just might be right!”

The Bell Tolls: The official death toll from Hurricane Maria has been 64 since Hurricane Maria passed over Puerto Rico a year ago. Gov. Ricardo Rossello told reporters yesterday that he will now adopt the estimate of 2,975 produced in a study by George Washington University.

Nailing down an estimate was difficult because many people died indirectly as a result of the storm for lack of clean water, air conditioning, medicine, and power to run medical devices. One of the keys to setting a number was comparing deaths in the years before Maria to the months following.

The Gun Beat: More people are killed with guns outside of war than in it, according to a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Worldwide, an estimated251,000 people died at the point of a gun in 2016. The US, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela and Guatemala together account for more than half of the gun-related deaths in the world.

Officer Down: A Texas jury yesterday found a white former policeman guilty of murder for the 2017 shooting of a black teenager in a car driving away from him. It’s a rare conviction of a cop.

Firmer Balch Springs officer Roy Oliver, 38, killed 15-year-old Jordan Edwards, who has been described as an outstanding high school student and athlete.

Oliver and another officer had responded to reports of underage drinking and shots fired at a party in the predominantly black and Hispanic city of Balch Springs, about 15 miles southeast of Dallas. Oliver fired his rifle several times into a moving car with unarmed teenagers in it. Edwards was shot in the head.

Oliver’s defense claimed that he fired because his partner’s life was in danger, but the partner testified that it wasn’t so. First Assistant District Attorney Michael Snipes said of Oliver, “This guy is an angry, out-of-control, walking bomb.”

The Social Pages: Folk Rocker Neil Young and actress Daryl Hannah got married. Both are past their prime.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
