PsychWar: A new 542-page report says that prominent psychologists associated with the American Psychological Association worked with the CIA to blunt internal dissent over the agency’s “enhanced” interrogation techniques. It’s a big embarrassment to the APA, which fired its ethics director as a result.
The report says APA officials seeking to curry favor with the Department of Defense colluded with the CIA to issue interrogation guidelines that were in agreement with what the CIA was already doing; waterboarding, “walling”, and stressing prisoners. The APA’s opinions served to squelch internal psychologists who thought what the CIA was doing was wrong.
The Greek Chorus: After their prime minister and parliament knuckled under to European demands for more austerity, Greeks are wondering whether they have been betrayed by their government after voting “no” to a proposal that was not as tough as the latest. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras faced opposition from his own party for accepting what the voters rejected. The big question is whether Europe will loan Greece more money while forgiving some of its previous debt. The decision should come tomorrow.
Techworld: The Internet business is not so laid back as the days of scooters and nap sofas. Ellen Pao, famous for losing her sex discrimination suit against her former employer, was bounced as CEO of Reddit after her disastrous and unexplained firing of popular employee Victoria Taylor. Hundreds of Reddit message boards shut down in protest. More than 213,000 people signed a petition demanding Pao’s firing. Reddit’s mostly young male users directed a lot of un-vetted personal, ethnic, and sexual vitriol at Pao … but that’s the business she was running.
Nation: Katherine Archuleta, the director of the federal Office of Personnel Management, resigned yesterday after revelations that hackers took the personal information of as many as 25 million people from government computers. Two computer attacks, the second stealing the information on 22 million people, are believed to have come from China.
BookBeat: Revelations continue to roll out about Harper Lee’s “Go Set a Watchman,” her long-buried sequel to “To Kill a Mockingbird.” Reviewers are amazed to find that the wise and kindly Atticus Finch, who defends an innocent black man in “Mockingbird”, is a racist in the new book.
Michiko Kakutani writes in the NY Times that, “Scout is shocked to find, during her trip home, that her beloved father, who taught her everything she knows about fairness and compassion, has been affiliating with raving anti-integration, anti-black crazies, and the reader shares her horror and confusion.”
“Mockingbird” was actually a re-write of “Watchman”, which leaves readers scratching their heads wondering how the original hateful Atticus was transformed into one of the most revered characters in American literature.
The Obit Page: Omar Sharif, the handsome Egyptian actor who played opposite Peter O’Toole in Lawrence of Arabia and was the lovelorn Yuri in Dr. Zhivago, has died of a heart attack in Cairo at age 83. Sharif was multi-lingual and a master at bridge. He made many movies, but his career peaked early in the 1960s with “Zhivago” and “Lawrence” in which he played the Arab tribal chief Sherif Ali, who says to T.E. Lawrence, “Truly, for some men nothing is written unless THEY write it.”
PolitiLit: One of the unwritten requirements of running for president is that you have to have written a book. It doesn’t matter whether anyone reads it, you have to have one. Marco Rubio has a book called “American Dreams” and Mike Huckabee has a book titled “Gods, Guns, Grits, and Gravy.”
Ted Cruz also has a book, “A Time For Truth,” which, despite its sales numbers, the NY Times is keeping off its bestseller list. The reason, Times spokeswoman Eileen Murphy tells Politico, is that “the overwhelming preponderance of evidence was that sales were limited to strategic bulk purchases.”
In other words, Cruz is buying and not reading his own book.
