Black Lives: Protests against police killings spread across the country yesterday, turning violent in Baton Rouge and St. Paul. Police in Baton Rouge arrested 50 demonstrators who tried to block streets.
There were demonstrations also in Atlanta, Memphis, and Los Angeles.
In St. Paul, 102 people were arrested and 21 police officers were reported injured in clashes with protesters. The police said demonstrators threw rocks, bottles, steel rods, and Molotov cocktails.
Former NY Mayor Rudy Giuliani, appearing on CBS yesterday morning, added his voice to those condemning the Black Lives Matter movement. “When you say black lives matter, that’s inherently racist,” Giuliani said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.” “Black lives matter. White lives matter. Asian lives matter. Hispanic lives matter. That’s anti-American, and it’s racist.”
President Obama, speaking in Spain, said, “Whenever those of us who are concerned about fairness in the criminal justice system attack police officers, you are doing a disservice to the cause.”
Open Carry: As investigators sort out events in Friday’s night’s ambush, the mayor of Dallas says the Texas “open-carry” gun law added to the confusion because the police had a hard time sorting out protesters legally carrying guns from a gunman shooting cops. Among the marchers were 20 or 30 people carrying assault rifles.
Mayor Mike Rawlings told the NY Times the law could stand a little modification. “There should be some way to say I shouldn’t be bringing my shotgun to a Mavericks game or to a protest because something crazy should happen.”
Two men and a woman were arrested after the shooting because they had guns with them, but they were not part of the ambush.
Rawlings said, “I think it’s amazing when you think that there is a gunfight going on, and you are supposed to be able to sort who the good guys are and who the bad guys are.”
It’s Political: Bernie Sanders and Hillary Clinton are scheduled to appear together tomorrow in Portsmouth, NH, possibly bringing to a close the Vermont Senator’s renegade run for the presidency. Clinton has been cozying up to Sanders calling for free public college and adding a “public option” to Obamacare.
Clinton’s campaign had a near-death experience last week, coming close to indictment by the Justice Department for her recklessness in using private email while she was Secretary of State.
Maureen Dowd writes in the NY Times, “IT says a lot about our relationship with Hillary Clinton that she seems well on her way to becoming Madam President because she’s not getting indicted.” Dowd goes on, “And that’s the corkscrew way things go with the Clintons, who are staying true to their reputation as the Tom and Daisy Buchanan of American politics. Their vast carelessness drags down everyone around them, but they persevere, and even thrive.”
Plaza de Toros: A Spanish bullfighter has become the first matador killed in the ring since 1985. Fighting in an arena in eastern Spain, 29-year-old Victor Barrio was gored in the thigh and put to the ground by a 1,166-pound bull that then gored him in the chest, severing his aorta.
Culture Beat: Long thought of as the lowbrow knuckle-draggers of the ancient Middle East, the Philistines have been found in an Israeli archeological dig to be a bit more interesting. A cemetery holding the remains of about 150 Philistines has revealed jewelry, weapons, and perfumed oils. Archeologists have described Philistine culture as “worldly” and “elegant.” Part of their public relations problem is that the big Biblical dummy Goliath, who was taken out by David’s rock, was a Philistine.
