Protest and Hate, Hillary Blames Comey

Vol. 5, No. 318
In Transition: Protesters in New York yesterday marched from Union Square to Trump Tower chanting and carrying signs. One said, “Putin won.” Outside the Tower Trump supporters carried signs saying, “He is My President,” “Hillary for Prison” and “Crybabies.” Protesters also collected in Chicago and Los Angeles, where they choked Wilshire Boulevard for a dozen blocks.
On college campuses, immigrants, Muslims, and minorities say they are afraid of what will come under a Trump administration. It’s become a thing among the young anti-Trumps to wear a safety pin on their clothing as a signal that “you’re safe with me.”
Although his election has unleashed both the anti-Trump demonstrations and a spate of ethnic and racial hate incidents across the country, the president-elect has not stepped up to calm national emotions. Yesterday he tweeted, “This will prove to be a great time in the lives of ALL Americans. We will unite and we will win, win, win!” He has not addressed the enormous division he helped create.
As the jockeying for administration positions continues at Trump Tower in New York, former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski resigned from his position as a CNN analyst Friday. Lewandowski, for at least part of his time on CNN, was being paid by both the network and the campaign. Speculation is that he wants a job with the new administration.
Blame: Hillary Clinton blamed her loss on FBI Director James Comey’s late-campaign announcement that there was a new trove of her private-server emails on a computer seized from Anthony Weiner, the estranged husband of Clinton confidante Huma Abedin. Clinton made the statement on a conference call with her top donors and some of them talked about it later with the press.
Nation: The trial of a white University of Cincinnati police officer accused of murdering an unarmed black motorist ended in a hung jury. It was one of a string of police shootings that fed the Black Lives Matter movement. Off. Ray Tensing said that he thought he was being dragged by the motorist’s car and that his life was in danger. The jury had 10 white members and two black.
World: As many as half a million South Koreans marched in central Seoul yesterday demanding the resignation of President Park Geun-hye. Park has admitted that she shared policy information and took advice from Choi Soon-sil, the daughter of a cult leader. Choi had no government position, but evidently was influential. Park’ approval rating is at 5 percent for the second week in a row.
Permawar: A suicide bomber killed two American soldiers and two civilians yesterday inside Bagram Air Base, the largest US base in Afghanistan. Seventeen other people were wounded. The bomber entered the base with Afghan laborers who worked there.
On Nov. 4th three US Special Forces soldiers were killed by a Jordanian soldier at a checkpoint to a military base. The three were among 2,000 US soldiers aiding the fight against the Islamic State in Syria. Details of the shooting have not been released.
In Pakistan, the Islamic State has claimed responsibility for a suicide bomb that killed 45 people and wounded 100 at a Sufi shrine.
SNL: Alec Baldwin did not return as a triumphant Donald Trump last night. He wasn’t part of the show. The open featured Kate McKinnon as Hillary Clinton sitting at a piano singing Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” As she finished the lyrics that include “love is not a victory march,” she turned to the audience and said, “I’m not giving up and neither should you.”
