Patriotic Education, Revising the Lineup

Revisionist History: President Trump announced yesterday a new effort to promote education in American schools that focuses on patriotism and what he believes is a more accurate history of  the country.

Speaking during the White House Conference on American history at the National Archives, Trump said, “We must clear away the twisted web of lies in our schools and classrooms and teach our children the magnificent truth about our country. We want our sons and daughters to know that they are the citizens of the most exceptional nation in the history of the world.”

He announced the establishment of what he calls the “1776 Commission” to revise the teaching of history.

Trump is bucking the current revisionism in American history; tearing down statues of Confederate heroes and slave owners while examining the legacy of slavery itself. “The Left has warped, distorted, and defiled the American story with deceptions, falsehoods, and lies,” Trump said.

He said, “There’s no better example than The New York Times totally discredited 1619 Project.”

The 1619 Project is a history of slavery and its aftermath in the country, named after the year the first slaves arrived in America. Although even the White House itself was built by slaves, Trump hates the idea posed by the series that slavery still shapes American life and culture. Far from discredited, the series won a Pulitzer Prize.

Trump said, “This project rewrites American history to teach our children that we were founded on the principle of oppression, not freedom. Nothing could be further from the truth. America’s founding set in motion the unstoppable chain of events that abolished slavery, secured civil rights, defeated communism and fascism, and built the most fair, equal, and prosperous nation in human history.”

He said, “Our youth will be taught to love America with all of their heart and all of their soul.”

Further Revision: Speaking of the legacy of slavery and racism in the country, a record 10 of 32 starting quarterbacks in the first week of the National Football League season are black. Not only that, probably the five best quarterbacks are black. Two of them have won Super Bowls.

It used to be that even if a black kid got to be quarterback for his college team, he was automatically re-assigned to be a receiver or defensive back if he made it to the pros.

And when you consider President Trump’s patriotic education campaign, thousands of children across the US attend schools that are named for  Confederate leaders and military officers who fought to preserve slavery and White supremacy. According to the Equal Justice Initiative, about half of those schools have students bodies that are predominantly black or nonwhite.

Nor Gloom of Night: A federal judge in Washington state granted a request by 14 states to temporarily block operational changes within the US Postal Service that have been blamed for a slowdown in mail delivery.

Judge Stanley Bastian said, “The states have demonstrated that the defendants are involved in a politically motivated attack on the efficiency of the Postal Service.” He said after a 2½-hour hearing in Yakima, “They have also demonstrated that this attack on the Postal Service is likely to irreparably harm the states’ ability to administer the 2020 general election.”

Viral News: The worldwide number of coronavirus cases has surpassed 30 million; 30,205,226. The US is on the brink of 200,000 deaths.

As President Trump crows about what a great job he’s done, The NY Times reports that a much criticized recommendation about virus testing on the CDC’s website was not written by CDC scientists, further evidence that politics are overriding medicine in the Trump administration.

The guidance said it was not necessary to test people without symptoms even if they had been exposed to the virus. The administration claimed that was written by the CDC, which turned out not to be true.

Home of the Whopper: Joe Biden held a town hall hosted by CNN. Remember, he’s a politician running for president and prone to stretching the truth.

Biden said of the pandemic, “If the president had done his job, had done his job from the beginning, all the people would still be alive. All the people — I’m not making this up. Just look at the data. Look at the data.”

Donald Trump may have fumbled, but there’s no evidence he could have prevented all deaths in the US.

Boogaloo: FBI Director Christopher Wray told Congress that Russia is still trying to influence the US presidential election and hoping to “denigrate” former vice president Joe Biden.

“The intelligence community consensus is that Russia continues to try to influence our elections,” Wray said. Unlike in 2016 when the Russians hacked the Democrats’ emails and state election systems, Wray said this year the Russians are focusing on misinformation campaigns. The Russians are trying “to denigrate Vice President Biden and what the Russians see as a kind of anti-Russian establishment,” Wray said.

In the midst of questions about right and left wing violence in the streets, Wray mentioned a new thing called “Boogaloo” — at least it’s new to us — an online movement of the far right. “Their main focus is just dismantling, tearing down the government,” Wray said.

The Bulletin Board: A former model named Amy Dorris claims in a new interview that President Donald Trump sexually assaulted her at the US Open tennis tournament in New York in 1997 by forcing his tongue down her throat and groping her. The Trump campaign denies it, but there is a picture of Dorris, Trump, and another man sitting together. —- Jerry Harris, a favorite on the Netflix documentary series “Cheer,” was has been charged with production of child pornography in a federal court in Chicago.

Mailing it In: Continuing his campaign against mail ballots and setting up a claim for a fixed election, President Trump tweeted, “Just out: Some people in the Great State of North Carolina have been sent TWO BALLOTS. RIGGED ELECTION in waiting!”

But what if they voted twice for him?

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
