Man in the Hat: Belgian investigators say the terrorists who struck in Brussels last month had originally planned to strike in Paris, but acted locally and quickly because the authorities were breathing down their necks. One of the primary targets was to have been La Défense, a large commercial and office complex northwest of Paris.
Belgian authorities also confirm that a man they arrested Friday is the so-called “man in the hat,” who appeared in security video with two suicide bombers at the Brussels airport last month. The man, Mohamed Abrini, was also seen in a series of other security videos as he walked away through the streets.
The prosecutor’s office said in its statement that Abrini had confessed his involvement. “He explained having thrown away his (suicide) vest in a garbage bin and having sold his hat afterwards,” the statement said.
It’s possible that all the major players in the Paris and Brussels terrorist cells are dead or in jail, and Abrini might be the link between the two. Abrini has been friends since childhood with Salah Abdeslam, the 10th man believed to have been part of the Paris attacks last fall.
The Numbers: Bernie Sanders won the Wyoming caucuses yesterday putting another dent in the morale of Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Sanders beat Clinton 55.7 to 44.3 percent, splitting 14 delegates with Clinton, but it’s Bernie’s 7th win in a row. He’s still behind by 250 elected delegates, and much more when you count the super delegates.
Nation: Just before closing time for the Obama administration, the president is looking more attractive to voters presented with the array of candidates to replace him. With the economy improving and as he maneuvers through foreign affairs, for the first time since 2013, President Obama has an approval rating above 50 percent, according to an Associated Press/GfK poll. At this point in their presidencies George W. Bush was at 30 percent approval and Bill Clinton was 60 percent.
World: An explosion and fire caused by fireworks have killed at least 100 people at a Hindu temple in the Indian state of Kerala, police say. At least 200 more people were injured.
The fireworks exploded as thousands of people had gathered to celebrate a local new year festival. A building collapse caused many of the deaths.
> Greek police today fired teargas to push back migrants trying to break through a fence between Greece and Macedonia. About 11,000 migrants are camped nearby in Macedonia.
The Obit Page: William Hamilton, the New Yorker cartoonist who made fun of the rich and powerful in sketching featuring stuffy-looking people, was killed in a car accident a few miles from his home in Lexington, Ky. He was 76. His point was that the rich are not so different from you and me, but they sure can be funny. One cartoon showed a couple getting dressed to go out — he’s obviously older — she says, “You promise I won’t be the only trophy wife at this thing?”
Career Move: Formerly popular actress Kirstie Alley has endorsed Donald Trump for president, prompting one internet wag we know to say, “Oh. I was wondering how she was going to end her career.
