OK, It’s Really Cold, Road Rage Arrest

Frozen: The arctic cold snap in the East is expected to continue through today then ease off to more normal February temperatures. The cold front has dipped so far south that it’s 31 degrees this morning in Daytona Beach, Fla., 24 degrees in Jacksonville. Way up in Traverse City, Mich., it’s -18. Chicago, -2; Buffalo, -2; New York, 2; Boston 5. Snow, rain, and ice are expected to move into the Northeast over the weekend.

Road Rage: Police have arrested a young Las Vegas man in the Feb. 12 road rage murder of a 44-year-old wife and mother of four. Investigators and the family say the victim Tammy Meyers knew the accused and had been a mentor to him.

Police are searching for one other person.

It’s a complicated case that never smelled right. According to several reports Meyers got into a road incident with the young man, went home, dropped off her daughter, and asked her son to come out with his gun to help find and confront the offending driver. According to some accounts the suspect, Erich Nowsch Jr., came back to the Meyers house and in an exchange of gunfire, he shot Meyers in the head.

The accused lives only a block away from the Meyers home. He’s charged with murder, but the police are still sorting out whether Meyers’ own actions were a factor in her death.

Econ 101: Walmart raised its minimum wage to $9 an hour and will raise it again to $10 on Jan. 1, 2016, the company announced. They also said they would be setting employee work schedules 2 ½ weeks in advance. Constantly changing work schedules and short notice have been a growing issue among workers.

The Sports Business: San Diego and Oakland, two NFL teams that have grumbled about their home stadiums for years, announced surprise plans yesterday to build a joint stadium outside Los Angeles.

City officials in San Diego said they felt betrayed after working with the Chargers to plan a new stadium. Oakland has refused to subsidize a new stadium for the Raiders.

This project competes with other plans to build a football stadium on the site of the old Hollywood Park horse track. Los Angeles has not had an NFL team since 1994, and despite the efforts of politicians and the money people, you don’t hear Angelenos screaming “We need a football team!”

The Obit Page: Former Navy admiral John Craven, who pioneered the use of submarines in Cold War espionage, has died at age 90. In 1965 he outfitted the nuclear sub Halibut with an array of electronic, sonic, photographic, and video gear that could be used to spy on adversaries and find US subs that occasionally sank in accidents. One of the big accomplishments of his efforts was tapping an underwater cable in the Sea of Okhotsk that was used by Soviet nuclear forces. The sub found the cable by reading a sign on shore that said in Russian, “No Anchoring, Underwater Cable.”

>Herald Price Fahringer, an untiring and urbane New York lawyer who defended pornographer Al Goldstein, accused wife-murderer Claus von Bulow, and the diet doc killer Jean Harris, has died at age 87. Fahringer was an ardent defender of free speech who didn’t care for what Goldstein did, but defended his right to do it. He wasn’t shy about immersing himself in the material he defended, but after screening a flick called “Cake Orgy,” he said, “You’ll never eat a marshmallow pie again as long as you live.”

Tough Love: Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani is defending himself after telling a group of New York swells he thinks President Obama doesn’t love America. Speaking at a fundraising event for Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, Giuliani said, “I do not believe that the president loves America.” He said. “He doesn’t love you. And he doesn’t love me. He wasn’t brought up the way you were brought up and I was brought up, through love of this country.”

After suggesting that Obama is something “other” than American, Giuliani told the NY Times his remarks were not racist because Obama’s mother was white.

Back at the event Giuliani said, “I want an American president to raise our spirits again, like a Ronald Reagan.” Now we understand. He wants a president with an IQ equivalent to his own.

It's Been Said

"Christians, get out and vote, just this time. You won't have to do it anymore. Four more years, you know what, it will be fixed, it will be fine, you won't have to vote anymore, my beautiful Christians. I love you Christians. I'm a Christian. I love you, get out, you gotta get out and vote. In four years, you don't have to vote again, we'll have it fixed so good you're not going to have to vote."
