Vol.2, No. 323
Healthcare: President Obama promised to veto a House bill that would allow insurance companies to keep selling policies that don’t conform to Obamacare. Thirty-nine Democrats joined the Republicans to passing the bill. Although Obama already asked insurance companies to extend policies by a year, the House bill goes further and would allow insurance companies to sell the kinds of insufficient-coverage policies Obamacare was designed to end.
After a meeting at the White House yesterday, some insurance executives expressed doubt that they could renew the millions of cancelled policies. That’s up to individual state insurance regulators and some have said they will not go along with the president’s order.
Philippines: Philippine President Benigno Aquino is having a George W. Bush moment as he faces criticism for his response to the country’s Typhoon disaster. Aquino apparently did not comprehend the enormity of the damage. And in the first six days, the government distributed only 50,000 food packs, enough for only about 3% of the families hit by the storm. The number of confirmed deaths is approaching 4,000. Until the Typhoon, Aquino had presided over a country with a growing economy and rocketing stock market.
National: Prosecutors charged a white suburban Detroit homeowner with murder for killing a young black woman who came to his door looking for help at 4:30 am after a car crash. Theodore Wafer, 54, is accused of shooting 19-year-old Renisha McBride in the face with a shotgun on Nov. 2. McBride was drunk and injured when she knocked on the door. Wafer told police his gun accidentally went off, firing through his screen door.
- Four skeletons found in the California desert are believed to be of a San Diego area couple and their two young children who disappeared nearly four years ago. The remains were found Monday by an off-road motorcyclist. Joseph and Summer McStay and their two young children went missing in February 2010. Their SUV was found near the Mexico border. Investigators eventually concluded the family had left for Mexico.
Correction: A Harrisburg, Pa. newspaper apologized for giving the president’s speech a bad review. Not this president, President Lincoln. And it was the Gettysburg Address. In 1863 the Patriot & Union wrote, “We pass over the silly remarks of the President. For the credit of the nation we are willing that the veil of oblivion shall be dropped over them and that they shall be no more repeated or thought of.” The paper, now the Patriot-News, said their retraction was a way to honor the address and say, “Gee, can you believe what rock heads ran this outfit 150 years ago?”
Smart Alec: Actor Alec Baldwin has been suspended from his foundling MSNBC talk show after uttering an anti-gay slur at a paparazzo. Baldwin’s show “Up Late” was pulled last night and will be dark again next Friday. Baldwin lives a tabloid life. Just this week a woman was convicted of stalking him.
The Undead: Netflix has revived “The Killing”, the twice-cancelled Seattle murder series for a final six-episode run. Linden and Holder get one last soggy mystery to solve.
