Tron: The Administration has appointed an efficiency expert to fix the Obamacare website from the inside. Jeffrey Zients was first appointed in 2009 to the Office of Management and Budget to make federal agencies and departments run efficiently, and in particular to make smart use of technology. He previously helped solve computer problems with new GI Bill benefits and the Cash for Clunkers car program.
Despite the computer nightmares, four national polls show approval of Obamacare has risen an average 3.5%, although it still hovers in the low 40s.
New School Murder: A 14-year-old boy in Danvers, Mass. has been charged with the murder of a math teacher whose body was found in the woods behind the local high school. Colleen Ritzer, 24, was reported missing last night and blood was found in a school bathroom.
School Shoot: Investigators say the 12-year-old shooter at the Sparks, Nev. Middle School Monday got the 9mm handgun from his family home. Police say the parents are talking, but still could be charged with a crime involving the gun. Revenge for bullying is the suspected motive in the fatal shooting of a teacher and wounding of two students.
Tab Wars: As if you need more Apple stuff, the computer company has high hopes for its new 1 pound, 9.7 inch tablet, the iPad Air. It’s lighter, thinner, faster, and leaps tall buildings. But they have quietly reduced production of the iPhone 5C, the supposedly more affordable iPhone that is not selling well. And they are losing market share in tablets. Apple once had 65% but now is roughly 50-50 with Google’s Android tablets.
Leaf Peepers: There’s gold not just in autumn leaves, but some have traces in their chemistry, according to Australian researchers. Trees growing in areas with gold in the ground sometimes have the metal in their leaves. It could become a way to locate deposits of gold and other metals.
That’s Rich: The Vatican has suspended a German bishop dubbed “the bling Bishop.” Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-Van Elst spent $40 million on a new diocesan building, including a $3.9 million personal quarters with a $20,000 bathtub. The Vatican decided to investigate after he flew first-class on a plane.
Under the Dome: The rotted, rusted, and cracked Capitol dome is about to undergo a two-year, $60 million restoration. The dome will be enclosed in scaffolding and most of the work will be done at night so it will not interfere with the business of Congress. That’s it. No other comment.
High Times: Fifty-eight percent of Americans believe marijuana should be legal, according to the Gallup Poll. That’s up from 12% the first time Gallup asked the question in 1969, when obviously a lot of people were lying.
