National: Focusing his message on the economy this past week, President Obama said in an interview with the NY Times that the widening disparity in income and opportunity is “fraying” the fabric of American life. The paper reported that the President said he would work with Congress to improve life for the middle class, but, “I’m not just going to sit back if the only message from some of these folks is no on everything, and sit around and twiddle my thumbs for the next 1,200 days.”
>Anthony Weiner’s campaign manager has quit, adding to the troubles of the NY Mayoral candidate. Anthony Kedem, 31, resigned after revelations this past week that Weiner had continued his crude Internet activity.
World: In Cannes, France this morning, a stickup man stole $53 million wort,h of goods from a jewelry exhibition at the Carlton Hotel.
>About three million people waited all night on Brazil’s Copacana Beach for an appearance today by Pope Francis.
Mayhem: Seven people are dead, including the gunman, after a mass murder and standoff in a Hialeah, Fla. apartment complex. The gunman set fire to his apartment then went from floor to floor killing people. He even used his handgun to shoot a man across the street. He then held a couple at gunpoint until the SWAT team took him out.
>A bride-to-be and her fiance’s best man were killed Friday when the boat they were riding in at night hit a barge on the Hudson River. The groom and three other passengers were injured. Police are searching for the body of the best man and the boat’s driver has been charged with manslaughter.
>The driver in the high-speed Spanish train derailment that killed 78 people has been charged with manslaughter. The train was going as much as twice its proper speed when it hit “Dead Man’s Curve”.
The Obit Page: JJ Cale, the singer-songwriter who wrote “Cocaine” and “After Midnight” died of a heart attack outside San Diego at 74. Cale’s best songs were put on the charts by Eric Clapton and others. Cale’s music is more famous than he was. He was a private man who said in his biography, “I’d like to have the fortune, but I don’t care too much about the fame.”
>Former Rep. Lindy Boggs, the first woman elected to Congress from Louisiana, has died at age 97. She served for 20 years after succeeding her husband, Hale Boggs, Sr., who died in a plane crash in Alaska. She was the mother of journalist Cokie Roberts.
Take it Black: A study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that coffee drinkers are less likely to commit suicide, unless of course there’s no coffee in the house at 6:30 AM.
