Vol.2, No. 271
Nuketalk: Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani told the Washington Post he would like to reach a quick agreement with the US over his country’s nuclear development. “If it’s three months that would be Iran’s choice, if it’s six months that’s still good,” Rouhani said. His policy turnabout has many analysts wondering whether he’s too good to be true. Iran’s foreign minister and Secy. of State John Kerry are expected to meet today.
Shutdown Countdown: Four Days. The Senate voted to keep moving a spending bill, but not before John McCain ripped Texas Sen. Ted Cruz for comparing the acceptance of Obamacare to appeasing the Nazi takeover of Germany. McCain said American voters spoke their will on healthcare reform when they re-elected President Obama. “They spoke much to my dismay, but they spoke,” McCain said. During his 21-hour, 19 minute Senate speakathon to stall Obamacare, Sen. Cruz read Dr. Seuss’s “Green Eggs and Ham”, a poem about trying something you think you don’t like.
The Numbers: President Obama’s approval ratings have fallen to a two-year low, according to a NY Times/CBS poll. Forty-nine percent of the public disapproves of the job Obama is doing and 43 percent approve. The poll says the president’s numbers have suffered because of the economy, Obamacare, the deficit and the possibility of a government shutdown. But 44% of respondents said they would blame the Republicans for a government shutdown.
Shooter: The FBI released video of Navy Yard shooter Aaron Alexis stalking the halls with a sawed-off shotgun before opening fire. In a creepy foreshadowing of what was to come, Alexis sees a group of people at the end of a long hallway. Video of actual shooting was not released.
Stamp Act: The US Postal Service proposed raising the price of a first class stamp from 46 to 49 cents, a 6.5% hike. The USPS recently tried to end Saturday delivery and wants to stop front-door service for newly built homes.
Small Screen: Michael J. Fox returns to television tonight with The Michael J. Fox Show. Fox, who left regular television work in 1999 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, plays a television anchor who has Parkinson’s disease. He’s taking new medication that helps him endure the grind of sitcom production.
Cup Comeback: In one of the greatest comebacks in sailing history, Team Oracle USA won the America’s Cup on San Francisco Bay. The American boat, which had only one American in its crew, won the last eight races in a row. The Cup was raced with 72-foot, $100 million “superyacht” catamarans that reach 50 mph, making a sport for the rich into a sport for the even richer.
